Dark Conflict is better than people give it credit. As much as DS is my favourite game in the franchise, it is incredibly unbalanced. Dark Conflict reigned that in a lot. I enjoyed the aesthetic of it. It has a killer soundtrack as well.

I'm with you. It's mechanically the best game in the series. The aesthetic change from the rest of the series may not sit well with people but it's still a great -looking and -sounding game.

It just feels a little light on content compared to the others. Haven't even cleared the War Room in the other games I don't think, but I S Ranked all of Dark Conflict's missions and there wasn't a Hard Campaign. The campaign itself was a good challenge but I wanted some more maps/challenges.

Dual Strike is also my favourite, but Dark Conflict is great too.

I did one of my ARcade Attacks videos on it (See the link in my sig if you're interested).

The secret best Advance Wars game is Field Commander on the PSP.

^ Don't know how I had never heard of that game. Going to have to check it out.

In the past I've actively looked for Advance Wars clones since I like the series so much and there is woefully little of it. Was hopeful when I first heard of Tiny Metal - one of the latest self-proclaimed such clones - but it turned out to be kind of garbage. Bit of a sucker for turn-based military-themed strategy games in general.

Have you played Greed Corp? It's not my kind of game but sounds like you may like it.

Yeah I did them for a while a year or two ago. I've been meaning to get back to them as season 3 got abandoned mid-way through and I really enjoyed them.

I'm happier with some more than others, but Outfoxies was genuinely fun to play. I love an obscure gem.

Also try Into the Breach, it's quite a different game yet it has that AW feel and aesthetic to it, its like a simplified combination of Advance Wars and XCOM with Pacific Rim vibes.

There's a little known advance wars clone called Fire Emblem only different is it doesn't have capture points or vehicles and it's 100% certified for weabos.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

To mark this 10 year anniversary I think we should get some retro collection pics going (though not me as I stupidly posted them last week).

Check out my YouTube channel!

Kriken wrote:Yesterday I found out that the UK version of Advance Wars Dark Conflict has an entirely different script to the version released in the US (where it's called Days of Ruin).

Bit of a surprise. Off the top of my head I can't think of another instance where there have been two completely different English scripts for games. But it's got me thinking if this is more common than I think because I was completely unaware of this for years. Doesn't help this game wasn't too popular, I guess.

I looked at a comparison and can confirm that the two scripts are really different from the get-go and apparently diverge even more later in the game with a character having a completely different personality. Can say I'm glad about what we got - the US script tries a bit too hard to be hip and is strangely written in some places.

That's happened with a few nintendo games where they've had different localisation teams between US and EU. I think the two another code games had it as the main character refers to her mother as "mum" in the uk releases.
EU having it's own localisation team is better to be honest. Treehouse have a pretty appalling record.

Yeah, I agree that EU having its localisation team is better - at least for the scripts.

Not too long ago I was re-playing the Advance Wars games and found the writing kind of cringey. As a kid I either liked the writing or didn't notice it. I guess they were probably using the US translation as the basis for the UK version before tweaking it, because there are some instances in AW:Dual Strike's text where they use US-only character names. And the US version of Dark Conflict's script has the same kind of vibe.

Guess I'm glad they finally split the translating job for Dark Conflict even if it's a tad late and with no new games in sight. It's apparently pretty faithful to the original Japanese script. Some may say the more faithful translations are bland, but in this case it turned out fine and in my experience it generally is. Usually scripts just need spicing up in a big way if the original is just too bad or boring - like with the Ghost Stories dub.
