PostGenre of the Year

In both quality and quantity of games, is there any one genre that has stood out to you this year?

I was thinking this as I'm nearing the end of Guacamelee 2, and realised how many metroidvania games I have played this year:

Hollow Knight
Yoku's Island Express
Guacamelee 2
Alwa's Awakening
Dandara
Owlboy

These games also have good reviews and I intend to play at some point:

The Messenger
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Dead Cells

This list is skewed a bit by games that released in previous years but only came to Switch this year, but for me that basically makes them 2018 games. The overall quality is fantastic, with Hollow Knight sitting at the top of the entire genre for me.

Anyone got any others?

For me, it's VR. Sure, my experience has only started in the past few days but the impact has been amazing; it feels like a whole new area of gaming has opened up.

It's not perfect, of course - the picture can be slightly fuzzy, setup and space challenges can be a pain, control systems are quirky in some games, and, yes, a sense of queasiness can crop up... but overall the feeling created is fresh and terrific.

I'm in the Hollow Knight camp for me it's the game of the year as this is the year I played it and the year it was released on the platform I played it on. I am also a real lover of the metroidvania style of game.

As a retro gamer I think you might like Alwa's Awakening, it's both metroidvania and faithful NES recreation

I also adore how it looks and sounds!

Probably Metroidvania for me as well. Iconoclasts is another one to add to the list. The JRPG hasn’t had a bad year either, with Octopath, TWEWYmix, and Let’s Go.

I don’t get much gaming time, but the majority of my year has been spent playing Trials Fusion, Hollow Knight and recently Sniper Elite 4.

So my genre appears to be either motorbike platforming, bug based metroidvania or stealthy testicle shooting.

Oh yeah, of course Iconoclasts! Another game I really want to play. It's just gone on PS+ so I might get my Vita back out for that one

Part of me wants to wait for a sale price, but the realistic part of me knows I will be buying it and the season pass day one.

Probably JRPG/RPG for myself. Spent a good chunk of the year on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu, West of Loathing, Octopath Traveller (well the opening 5 or so hours, twice) and I’ll probably be starting Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna DLC over the weekend (or finally start Stardew Valley again, I’ve only been saying this for a few months now!).

When I’ve not been playing these I’ve been replaying the older Pokémon games as well (4 combined runs over Gold and Crystal, 3 over Red and Yellow, plus another single run on Moon and Ultra Moon). I’ve also put a fair few more hours into Skyrim and BoTW as well.

So I’d say for myself the JRPG/RPG genre has definitely had most of my gaming time for 2018.

Not specifically a genre but Retro!

Spent the vast majority of the year playing with emulators, building or buying hardware for custom emulation setups, playing retro games and I don't see that interest flagging anytime soon. Definitely interested in building more custom setups and adapting other hardware (I'm eyeing my Amazon Fire HD stick). Potentially getting a couple more Raspberry Pi's and having dedicated systems based around Retro computers.

Oh and VR has delivered some phenomenal games this year. Moss and Astro Bot are phenomenal platformers and if it wasn't for Spider-Man, Astro Bot would be my game of the year.

Thanks for the heads up on Alwa's Awakening OR that looks right up my street! :toot:

I'd have to go with the Metroidvania for this year as well, Hollow Knight alone is a solid reason for making that case but as mentioned there have been plenty of others to back it up!

JRPG for me, I've been mainly playing older titles like Persona 3 Portable but I've also sunk over 150 hours into Disgaea 5 since November.

Turn Based Strategy has also featured quite heavily too thanks to Into the Breach.

In 2018, heatlight won 2,088 Achievements in 146 games, for a total of 166,308 TrueAchievement points (89,553 Gamerscore)

I guess 'easy completion' is my genre of the year. Again.

Gotta be Metroidvania for me too. It's been an absolute pleasure getting stuck into some of these on Switch and hopefully next year will continue the run of quality with Bloodstained.

Only 2,088?

A real achievement would be getting 2,500.
