PostGetting the GRcade Podcast going again [Sign-ups closed]
by That » Sun Apr 08, 2018 1:56 pm

Hi all! A few months ago the GRcade Podcast stalled. I think to get it going again we're going to need to open up signups and see who's interested in contributing.

The GRcade Podcast was (is?) a show more-or-less hosted by me and Super Dragon 64, and edited by Cuttooth, which focused on discussion: why are this studio's games considered great, how would we improve this genre, why don't we like this industry practice, how do we approach this issue. We wanted to go beyond the whats of 'what we're playing at the moment' and 'what score would I give it'. We actually had some great discussions! Some of my favourites were about review systems, indie games, loot-boxes, and Nintendo magic.

The schedule is two hours of time (to make a one hour recording) once every two weeks. We would usually record between 8ish and 10ish in the evening on whichever day we found worked best that week (if you sign up you can give an indication of your availability, see poll).

It's not an ultra-serious endeavour but my primary two goals were to 1. have fun and 2. produce something genuinely interesting, even for an outside audience. (I didn't want it to be full of GRcade in-jokes or whatever.) The archive is still stickied so you can check out our last few episodes if you're interested.

If you want to express interest, just make a quick reply to this thread with a couple of sentences about what areas you'd like to chat about on the podcast.

Hey Karl. I'll be up for taking part, I've enjoyed the podcasts I've been on and I like the way it's turned from just talking about what we've played to something with more depth. I can see there being a place for both though, like a serious discussion about an interesting topic one week and a more chill talking about what we've done on another week. Either way, I hope to take part again.

I would like to be involved, Saturday is the one day which is a no no for me. I am happy to talk about almost anything.

It's most likely a no for me, in terms of participation. I don't have the time these days.

But I'm more than happy to continue with the uploading and posting of episodes as before. Means we can keep the same Podcast feed and it'll link into the stuff we've done already.

I'll be willing to take part in this if there's room available. I can talk at length about certain aspects of video games, the fandoms that follow them, and the developers that make them. My main interests are retro games, Linux gaming, and in particular speedrunning, though I'm happy to chat about anything.

I'm aware of the too-many-cooks problem, though, so am happy to bow out in favour of others if need be.

I really enjoyed hosting this with Karl but I don't even have the time for an hour of Mario Kart on Mondays so I'll have to bow out of this revival. Good luck to everyone involved - I'm looking forward to listening to new series :toot:

It would be good to see this back, I dont have time to appear and on the game side of things don't really add much.

However it would be good to see it back and it would really good if this time round we can get some sort of social side going with it, if I can be let know when it is being put up abd what subjects are being covered I can schedule some relevant tweets and things rather than playing catch-up and posting after the fact like before.

I'd be up for it, the problem is that the record dates always seemed to fall on weekends where i'm away or otherwise indisposed. Also i'm pretty behind on new releases; the only thing I've gotten at launch has been Ni No Kuni 2 and I haven't started it yet :fp:

Great to see some interest here. I'll keep the sign-ups open for a week or so, so please keep them coming. At this stage it's the more the merrier, and we'll later make decisions about who features on the podcast based on the compatibility of people's interests and things like that.

I'd like to take part, but I couldn't commit to any regular schedule, especially not over weekends. I enjoyed the Nintendo and Ubisoft E3 post mortems I was a part of.

I like talking about games more than talking about the industry, if that's relevant

The E3 Post-Mortems will be back. I'll be putting out feelers for participants around the start/middle of May.

Yup, you could definitely count me in for something like this. Although, considering that's what pretty much everyone has said I'm not sure how useful that is.

EDIT: Didn't add what I'd like to talk about. I'd actually say I'm more interested in the industry, and revisiting old games than I am with reviews or opinions of new games. Topic of choice would be narrative structure in games, how it works and its distinctions from similar structures in other media.

Yeah I'd be another one in the "would love to be involved, but not sure how much I can commit to the schedule" camp.

How successful were you guys at meeting the two week schedule in previous incarnations?

It varied. We were good towards the start, and it fell apart a bit (for me too!) towards the end.

I think it's OK to have a mix of people who can show up like clockwork every fortnight and people who are only free occasionally. The problem with the roster as it stood was that we were essentially all in the latter category!

if loads of people are up for it ever thought of having an A team and a B team? A team do a monthly podcast, B team do a Monthly Podcast but the A teams comes out every 4 weeks starting in 2 weeks time and the B teams comes out every 4 weeks starting in 4 weeks time.... then you get a podcast every 2 weeks but everyone only has one commitment a month? No idea of if this sounds good or crappy but I figured it would be worth floating it. .. I am sure there are a million better ideas and someone will come up with one that gets as many involved on a basis they feel good with.

I could do this again. However, when it comes to gaming, I'm rather limited to Nintendo and retro in the usefulness stakes

Just confirming I can commit to a schedule if need be, and am otherwise available in the evenings generally.

Except me, cause I'm a sad twat and don't do socialising on a Saturday.
