The trailers they keep showing on tv really aren't doing this any favours. The comedy just looks like lowest common denominator slapstick crap. I fully expect Kevin James and Adam Sandler to make cameos.

Guardian review is in...

4/5: "Fun oozes from almost every frame; likewise the energy of a team excited to be revolutionising the blockbuster landscape."

"revolutionising the blockbuster landscape"...

Is this the same movie I've been watching in the trailers?

The guardian was never, ever going to give this a bad review. It may be good, but I wouldn't take a Guardian review of this as anything to go by.

Reviews in general seem to be pretty good to average so far.

The cynic in me says that they're just wanting to avoid the inevitable "OMG you sexists!" response if they gave it a bad review. I'm still not interested in it though. It represents everything I hate about modern "comedies".

There was a pretty cool Ghostbusters promo set up at Waterloo station today.

There was a big crowd, lots of people posing with them for photos, too. I had to wait a while to get them with nobody there.

I'm baffled by how well it's been received...is it a completely different film to what the trailers showed us or something? o_o

@Knoyleo That's fantastic!

Just got out of the cinema.

Mixed feelings about it, there's good and bad. At the end of the day though it's just a good amount of fun and it does have a nice cheery vibe to it. They lay it on a bit thick at the end with desperately wanting people to like it and leaving on that note I think has me won over and I'd recommend people see it.

To start with its probably worth saying I like the original Ghostbusters films and everything that came out of them but I don't consider the franchise hallowed turf like a lot of people it seems. I also wouldn't say they're the funniest films around either, but then it has been a long time since I watched them, this will probably prompt me to go back and give them another go over.

Regarding the comedy, well they throw an awful lot of jokes at the wall. A gooseberry fool load in fact and I'd say probably 80% of them don't land, or at least they didn't with me. The tone of the comedy in the trailers is accurate to what's in the film a lot of it is cringe worthy a lot of it is just meh. That said because of the sheer amount of jokes there are a good few funny one liners and one sequence in particular had the cinema in hysterics and was very well played by all involved. Melissa McCarthy I'd say is responsible for carrying a lot of the comedy, she has by far the best comedic delivery and timing. Wiig is a good actress but I've never really been a fan of her comedy performances and she doesn't do a whole lot for me in this humour wise but she plays a good straight man to McCarthy. The other two ehhh, Leslie Jones really wasn't for me a bit too much of a stereotype. McKinnon again rubbed me up the wrong way for most of the film but her character will be incredibly popular among young girls so I can see what they've done with her and it's admirable but I think she'll grate the trolls the most. Hemsworth is some times great sometimes bad. The overall problem with the comedy is just the quality of the writing isn't there for me, feels like a script written by committee. There's a good amount of humour in it and although the bad outweighs the good it doesn't drown it out completely

As for the plot and story, yep they're solid enough for what it is. The central villain is a bit of a nothing cliche but that's of no consequence really. I did feel it started to drag a bit towards the beginning of the third act but as I was thinking about reaching for my phone the film seemed to realise it and picked up the pace to pretty zipped through ending. Worth hanging around for the immediate credits too. Effects I'd say were absolutely top notch, it really did look fantastic, especially towards the end when gooseberry fool started kicking off. There's also a handful of nice surprises in the film I wasn't expecting

The only absolute turd in the film is the theme song, it really is strawberry floating awful and sequences would have been enhanced if they kept the original, though I understand why they didn't.

So yeah all in all its really not that bad, and given what they've tried to do with it I think it's worth getting behind and supporting. It's by no means a great film but there's plenty in there to work with and I'd be well up for a sequel.

3/5

Why do you need to check the time in the middle of a film?

So just a mediocre comedy then? Actually pleasantly surprised given how often they screw these things up.

I think I'm gonna see this tomorrow so I can have a genuine opinion on it. I saw it's showing now at my local Vue but I thought it was out Thursday night?
