Plymouth Gin distillery is worth a visit for those unfortunate to find themselves in the city.

Plymouth is a lovely city :(

 It really isn't

I got rejected from the Distillery a few weeks ago, not sure why however - Gin isn't agreeable with me

Going down to Plymouth for a couple of nights next month and the gin distillery is on the agenda.

A nice G&T at the end of a long night is so good :datass:

I went to the Distillery last time I was down there. It's not as long a tour as the Scotch Whisky place is in Edinburgh, but it's a good place to waste half a day. Annie the tour guide was great  Was tempted to buy the Savoy Cocktail Book, but it looked a bit rubbish.

Can't stand the stuff ever since I finished off my night with some after half a bottle of vodka. Bad times, I could taste it for days.

karl_fletcher wrote:I developed a gin addiction a year or so ago. I've tried many, many gins, from supermarket own brand to small batch, hand distilled spirits, and my favourite is still Tanqueray Number 10. Fever Tree is by far the best tonic and a slice of lime will suffice for most gins. Obviously cucumber for Hendricks and there are others that are complimented well by different garnish (such as orange for Whitely Neil, apple for Chase). I bought a bottle of Portobello Road with the intention of taking up their offer of going to their distillery to concoct my own gin by claiming I didn't like the product, but ended up just driniking it all.

^Vesper recipe for anyone feeling adventurous. Not sure where you would get the fancy aperatif from - we used martin dry :shifty:

Basically the recipe is 3/4 alchohol to 1/4 alcohol with a dash of alcohol thrown in for good measure !

I keep trying to go on a Friday or Saturday night but you need a member's card for those times. Which isn't difficult to get (go in and get a card then return 6 times in two months...) but it's a hassle.

Graphic Bar in Soho is a great place to try new gins. Good cocktails too.

Here is their ridiculous gin list: http://www.graphicbar.com/menu.php?menu=6814

That's an amazing list ! - I think I'll start at the top one and work my way down.... Knocking a point off for the fact that they serve schweppes tonic which is absolutely revolting and basically completely ruins any gin you mix it with - (Unless of course you love the great chemical taste of artificial sweeteners. Hint: if you want a relatively cheap big bottle of tonic without the dreadful aspartine then m+s do a bottle and britvic contains no sweeteners either.) But yeah, that's a pretty exhaustive list of gin !

Resurrects... Vespers are chuffing strong. One of those cocktails where even the mixer is alcoholic! Quite nice though.

I can report that Portobello Road No. 171 is a seriously lovely London dry gin. Picked up a bottle whilst on hols in Cornwall from Tesco on offer for the bargainy £16-00. Picked up a bottle form ye local Tesco yesterday for the not so bargainy £27-00. Absolutely bloody lovely though.

My house gin in the Sainsbury's own Taste The Difference Blackfriars gin. £16, for a really tasty, straightforward juniper heavy gin.

I've been drinking in the Holborn dinning room they have a gin bar with 600 gins and 30 tonics. You get different tonics with different tonics.

Sounds amazing! I’ve been to a similar bar in Madeira, the choice is staggering, blows your mind!

I've been making a lot of martinis recently. 4 parts gin to 1 part vermouth is the magic ratio for me. Heavily chilled glass, at least 40 seconds of stirring with ice, lemon zest rubbed around the rim of the glass and also to garnish.

Currently drinking Christopher Wren gin from the City of London distillery.

Now I want a martini! Going out for tea now though so it will have to wait. Never seen that gin before

Love G&Ts, quite good at making them as well if I say so myself. Favourite is probably a rhubarb G&T that I make with Bombay Sapphire and Fever Tree tonic, delicious :datass:

I'll drink pretty much anything with gin in though, not all that fussed about brands (although I think I could pass a taste test with expensive/cheap varieties).

I love gin with cranberry juice but I just don't get on with gin and tonic. My wife loves the stuff though. If I remember right I got her some Cotswolds gin last Xmas which she liked so I'll have to find her another expensive bottle this year. This thread should be a good source of info for buying a good one.

In fact, didn't we already have a gin topic? I'm sure I used it last year for the same purpose.
