It's definitely a massive game and I have reached the area where I have to seek Garm the Wolf.

Brilliant.

‘God of War’ TV Series a Go at Amazon
'Wheel of Time' showrunner Rafe Judkins and 'The Expanse' creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are adapting the award-winning PlayStation game.

Amazon’s Prime Video is getting into the video game adaptation business.

The streamer has greenlit a series based on the award-winning PlayStation game God of War. The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins will serve as showrunner on the adaptation, and Oscar nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man, The Expanse) are writing and executive producing with Judkins.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios are producing God of War in association with PlayStation Productions.

“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and [game developer] Santa Monica Studio.”

The series, in development since March, will follow Kratos, the God of War, who exiles himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece and hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. “When his beloved wife dies,” the show’s description reads, “Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

I hope it leans more towards The Expanse than Wheel of Time in terms of quality, lol

This thing is going to have the worst CGI known to man.

What’s the point though? It just sounds like a retelling of the 2018 game. In which case just play the game. Video game Adaptations are either unneeded adding nothing new or stray so far from source they might as well not bother. Cinematic games like this are practically films anyway so changing medium doesn’t change much.

I love god of war and don’t want them to butcher it, especially as it will be so reliant on cgi and visual effects (hard on a TV budget).

Cyberpunk edge runners is a good example recently. It was faithful to source material, told its own story that complemented the game rather than replace it and used a format (anime) that masked budgetary issues on effects and visuals.

To entertain. Not everybody plays games, and not everybody who plays games has a PlayStation, and not everybody who has a PlayStation has 30+ hours of undivided attention to spare to experience the God of War story.

Why adapt a book? Why have a live action adaptation of an animation? Why make a film into a stage adaptation? To expose the work to a new audience, while giving existing fans a fresh way to experience it.

I just don’t think it will offer anything that the game doesn’t aside from ropey cgi and probably bad casting (video game adaptations always struggle with expectation based on VA and image. Henry Cavil on the Witcher being an exception). It just reeks of Sony cashing in on IP. Between this, horizon and last of us we are drowning in video game TV shows.

I get your point about new audiences though, but you know it will be marketed primarily at gamers.

There's definitely a very narrow overlap on the venn diagram of people who wouldn't play the game and people who would be interested in this. At least right now. I'm going to assume they're not setting out to make a terrible show, so the idea is probably word of mouth will expand it. Like look at Game of Thrones, dark medieval low fantasy isn't exactly the most popular genre, but it became massive due to the strength of the show. My aunt and uncle were in and that's about as far from their usual tastes as it gets.

Obviously not saying this will be guaranteed to be GoT S1-4 level quality, but the theory is there.

I still find it impossible to take Kratos seriously as a character, so the idea of a TV show with him as the main character just sounds funny.

They should make it interactive (like Bandersnatch) and add QTEs.

My reaction in real time.

‘God of War’ TV Series a Go at Amazon

"Oooh this could be quite good."

'Wheel of Time' showrunner Rafe Judkins...

Wheel of Time was strawberry floating gooseberry fool.

I'd be up for this. I've really struggled to get into these new GoW games. Great gameplay but they just go on for far too long and I get bored and move on.
So condensing the story down into a 8-10 hour show should be great but my expectations are currently through the floor.

I'm in the Jungle.

Jesus. I thought I am closer to the end, but it seems like I am not any near to it yet. This game is definitely massive! :o

The “maybe I’ll follow this barking dog before I get back to the story” part in Vanaheim leads to probably the greatest high I’ve had in a game since you escape Midgar in FF7 and realise there’s a whole world to discover.

This game is next-level.

I am throughly enjoying this so far. I only ever played God Of War (PS4) and this seems pretty much for the most part the same game. There’s been some changes, and graphically it’s improved hugely (the other was nice too!) but it’s pretty much the same game so far for me which I actually quite enjoy

I wasn’t looking forward to playing as the boy more but I’ve just done the plot where you meet the girl in the land of the giants and fight her grandmother and I thought it was very well done

I finished the main story and I’m wrapping up the side stuff for the platinum. Vanaheim is probably my favourite “level” in any game ever. It’s just glorious.

Strongly disagree. I liked it even though it was badly affected by covid and one of the actors quitting/getting fired during lockdown.
