PostGoing to New York - recommendations other than the norm?
by ITSMILNER » Wed Sep 24, 2014 8:59 pm

So, I'm off to New York in a month's time with the other half and we are planning out what we want to do and see (Central park zoo, Statue of Liberty etc...)

I was wondering though, are there any places that are not part of the normal tourist attractions that are worth a look? Also what about good places to eat while we are there, any places highly recommend?

Any other tips and advice would be welcome (First time going)

Tick Tock diner in the New Yorker (by Maddison square garden) does great breakfasts.

Stop by and say hi to Phillip Schofield.

If you like beer go to the Brooklyn Brewery and have a brewery tour there they are a big craft beer brewer so should be pretty interesting.

Eat at the restaurants that the Man Vs Food guy goes to.

The Book of Mormon is absolutely worth seeing.

We did this pizza tour, they bus you to Brooklyn and give you guided tours and then stop off two proper Mafia hangout pizza places, both of which are absolutely godly :datass:

Bars, I can't remember really but there's a nice rooftop one on the corner of the New Yorker that we found on our last day waiting for the taxi ( :x ) so we couldn't get pissed.

Went there last year and absolutely loved it! Would recommend the following:

Take a trip to Coney Island (Subway is around 45 mins from Times Square)
Nintendo Store (they have Miyamotos' Zelda Sword and Shield from that infamous E3 unveiling and the Gameboy that survived the Gulf War plus some decent merchandise, although a lot of it is now on the UK Nintendo Store)
Trump Tower for breakfast
NY Yankees game - never saw one myself, but wish I did
Explore random areas - it's pretty easy to get around due to the grid system and Wifi is available at most shops

If you are into gangster movies there is an amazing museum in the Upper East Side for it that sort of thing. Plus it's a great area to explore.

The Tick Tock is amazing, I stayed in the New Yorker right next to it last year.

55 Central Park West, the Ghostbusters building in the first movie that's attacked by staypuff and Hook and Ladder 8, south bound to Franklin street IIRC will get you to the Ghostbusters firestation :D

Hit both of those last year, nice little bar across the road from the firestation too.

Strawberry fields, which again IIRC is south west central park if you're a John Lennon fan, it has a lovely vibe, usually there's a good group always there, few folk singing and stuff.

Jon's Pizzeria, I had it recommended to me here funnily enough before I went last year, I literately have never had a better pizza in my life, infact I don't really eat pizza anymore because they just don't live up to Jon's

Now I went with my Mum last year (took her there for her 50th), but a few times in the evenings I went out and about on my own, and found a strip club called Cheetahs which isn't far from Jon's, 43rd IIRC, nice enough place :shifty:

If you're arty there's the met, http://www.metmuseum.org/, it's rather good, better than the natural history museum which is for the most part a collection of stuffed animals American's shot, the dinosaurs are cool though.

Lego shop and Nintendo shop are both close to each other, in the same blcok up near the Rockefeller, highly recommend both, the Lego shop is expensive as usual, but the dioramas and atmosphere is great. The Nintendo shop is great, they have the mini museum section with the Gulf War Gameboy and such, and isn't overpriced, infact if you like gaming "fashion" you can get a load of tee shirts, caps, beanies and stuff for quite cheap. Also as many Pokemon plushies as you can afford/carry. If you have a DS take it too and get gooseberry fool tonnes of Streetpass hits.

Try visiting the other boroughs. Brooklyn is pretty hipster, but I really liked Queens. Didn't do anything in particular there, but it was cool walking through the various neighborhoods. Go through asian areas, then hispanic etc. with their food stalls and all that. Walking under the trains was fun too.

Plus 1 for Top of the Rock. Less busy too than ESB.

Natural History Museum is worth going to although obviously an obvious place. I wanted to go to the air craft carrier museum when I was there 6 years ago but it was under refurbishment :(

Loads of good food places around too.

Coney Island was fun and weird. A gooseberry fool hole but had an interesting vibe. Plus it's in The Warriors.
