I don't know, the general consensus seems to be one of surprise. Most people hadn't realised that 4GB flash memory, advertised on the box as fulfilling the same function as the HDD, wouldn't actually perform the same as a HDD. Anyone able to bring that to more people's attention is a good thing. Obviously yes, there'd be people like Rik, who will eschew the point about it being ridculous to even think that 4GB would be a HDD or that flash memory would be anything like the same thing, and that if you haven't read all the small print from all the box backs before you leave the house to make a purchase, it's your own fault, so tough.

Take this to a 360 dedicated forum, and yeah, you'd be laughed at, simply because you were stupid enough to buy the smaller version, but I like to think, despite the lack of new members here, that we'd be open enough not to hound off anyone who comes here with a gaming problem.

You'd think that, wouldn't you, but here we are, and by the looks of it, most posters agree they would have been caught out by this, too.

I must say, I didn't know about this either. And I spend more time on a gaming forum and on the internet than most people! Still, this thread has merely served to show once more just how much of a fanboy Rik really is. Yes, he buys other consoles, but his heart belongs to Microsoft.

Am I right in thinking the 4gig can actually be connected to a standard hard drive?

From what I've gathered in this thread, that won't work. You need to buy the official hard drive, which isn't out yet.

gooseberry fool I was going to buy one of those 4gb 360s to play Reach on :o I even posted about it in the thread a few days ago - no one seemed to know about it when I was being advised on buying a 360. As a consumer how would you know the difference between a HDD and flash memory in how it changes the features of the console?

Well you've saved me some money that's for sure, thanks Jiggles.

I have read in a couple of places that you can extract a HD from the old 360 style casing and use that. There are lots of old drives around at the moment, so that might be worth a try. I even read somewhere that it does not invalidate the warranty on the 360 S (MS allow it), but it does obviously invalidate the warranty on the old HD!

Thats not it, I just remember having this mentioned on here when it was announced they were taking the HD cables out of the box.

Youtube seems to suggest that currently you can literally rip the drive out of an old Xbox hard drive case and that'll work. I believe the 360 hard drives are just standard 2.5 mechanism prepped with modified firmware. It looks like a bitch to get it properly attached without the officlal hard drive bracket though, and there's no guarantee it'll continue to work in the future.

I've got a spare old 20gb Xbox drive sitting around here someplace (and they're pretty cheap to obtain second hand now). Might be worth a try. Worst case scenario I can envision, you completely bork the ability of your 360 slim to take hard drives / get yourself banned.

Well this pretty much sums it up, must be me, I like reading and getting all the information I can to the point of getting nearly confused about my purchases and might ponder the decision for a week... I consider it part of the fun of purchasing a console or any hardware.

I agree however that the game and console boxes should make it clear enough for the consumer to evaluate his purchase on the spot.

I got a 360S and this has taken me by surprise somewhat. It's not my primary 360 (got one of the Final Fantasy LE ones) - the 360S is mostly just for sitting round a friends for Reach multiplayer sessions, so the lack of co-op is somewhat unfortunate.

It's also backup for when one of these machines inevitably dies

Might give the 20gb hack a go.

Bollocks.

The situation is clear, EVERYONE knows as it has been a stick to beat the 360 with since 2005 that the Arcade cheapest 360 has no HDD, it was called the Tard pack, how apt in this case ;)

The memory bundled with the Arcade model has changed from none, to 64mb external, to 256mb internal and now to 4gb internal. So the amount has been upgraded at least 3 times in the last five years.

There have always been certain games that didn't work at all or had features restricted if you didn't have a HDD, including some co-op and backwards compatability, this has previously been very clear on the box (Crackdown, Burnout Paradise).

I would say that it ISN'T clear on the Halo Reach Box and that is wrong and I don't know why they have changed it.

As for not knowing the Arcade model didn't have a HDD and expecting a 4gb HDD in a new machine in 2010 well that's a mix of not doing your homework and a bit of stupidity, if Sony announced a 4gb PS3 today you'd think eh?

We're talking about a situation that has applied to the Arcade model for 5 years, so that's why I'm surprised people who frequent a Games Forum aren't aware of this, how this makes me a "wanker" I'm not sure but not surprised the mods let that one slip.

So yes the box of the game should be more clear and before you buy something you should do some research that the product does what you want.

I reckon we should tell BBC Watchdog, that way we'll sort the problem out and get some coverage for ourselves :shifty:

But seriously, just moan to trading standards, if lots of other people have had similar problems Microsoft could get in trouble over it.

Given that the entire design of the console has changed, and the SKUs have altered so many times since 2005, it's not a huge leap to expect that extra 3.75GB of space to be usable for something.

I'd think, "are there any games that could run on a 4gb machine?" But the difference is the PS3 game boxes clearly state how much HDD space is needed for a game. Microsoft have strawberry floated up with this release. Not just Reach either, ODST which was released a year ago is the same. The Arcade should make consumers aware they are purchasing a gimped 360. There are no excuses.
