It doesn't lose pace, because it doesn't have any pace. What exactly did you find powerful about OUATIA? What makes it better than Goodfellas? personally speaking, I found it overlong (over four strawberry floating hours), and exceptionally misogynistic.

and for that last bit, all i have to say is :fp:

Gangster films just don't tickle my fancy, but I enjoyed Goodfellas. Make of that what you will or ignore me completely. Whatever.

I can't believe I've read a negative opinion on The Departed! The complexities and interworkings of the story line just make you realise the work that's gone into it.

Can we turn this into the Scorsese film thread?

Next up: Taxi Driver.

To be fair its just a slight reworking of Infernal Affairs, it's still a brilliant film of course.

Saw that for the first time a few months ago. Astonishing film.

It doesn't require much work to copy someone else's film, chuck in some famous American actors and tack on a stupid ending.

The Departed was OK but Infernal Affairs is still the better film.

Taxi driver - Horribly over-rated, discuss!

I am quite partial to the western version, i am not saying its brilliant, but it was a good riff raff of a film! great cast, the soundtrack was ace, and the ending was pretty good.

Most of Leone's films were misogynistic though. I'm agreeing with JiggerJay here, but I've already stated my love for OUATIA far too much on old GR, probably not the best idea to repeatedly state it here.

I still find it amazing & very depressing that anyone (let alone 2 people) think that OUATIA was good. :|

Overly long, dull, self indulgent pap is what is it.

The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon A Time In The West. Unsure about A Fistful Of Dynamite, will have to rewatch it.

It's been a while since I last saw it, but Claudia Cardinale's, Jill McBain struck me as quite a strong willed character.

Don't recall any overt misogyny in any of those. Perhaps in, For a Few Dollars more, but then the rape in that is pepertrated by Indio, the villain of the piece.

True, that my initial opinion. After about 50 more views though I started realising that Leone is calling her a self interested slag. She may ne strong willed but Leone is still basically calling her a bitch, a promiscuous bitch at that. True, it's not blatantly overt misogyny but if you see some of the behind the scenes material Leone never wanted a woman as a main character, he always thought it was a mans role.

I will admit I was fairly mistaken with The Dollars Trilogy, it's not as misogynystic as I made it out to be but there's still a hint of it to them, again mainly due to Leone's own beliefs.

Fair enough. It's due a re-watch, so I'll give it another go.

Leone did have a way with controversy. He described the rape scene in OUATIA as an 'act of love'. It kinda makes sense in a twisted way but I can only imagine the amount of flack he got for that.

Yep, I kind of guess that. I was being a tad facetious. Also, something that's always bugged me
How the hell did James Woods hide the fact that he was a senator and had married a famous Deborah from Noodles? Surely, Noodles would have read a newspaper, watched television, had his eyes open whilst being incognito?

Because Noodles thought Max was dead? Woods became Senator Bailey so Noodles wouldn't have noticed. And in the final scenes Noodles doesn't even refer to Max as Max, he keeps calling him Senator Bailey. It's likely he's so distraught that he killed his friends that he refuses to accept any other explanation, he's trapped in his own little world. By the way, have you heard the 'dream' theory? Now that is messed up.
