Nothing can be done about that, unfortunately. If you keep checking back you should get in eventually.
Basically Google are only opening the invite gates for certain periods of time.

The way I see this challenging Facebook more realistically is how it could easily integrate with existing GMail and and Android marketshare (which is massive), something Facebook never had leverage for.

It's uploaded all my photos from my phone which is kinda cool. But without many of my real life friends on it I'm not sure how much I'll use it.
Would be useful as a private board for group projects at uni... but I've now left uni.

How do you add people on this without necessarily adding them to a circle?
I ask because I've had a few people add me now, but It only shows me as being in one person's circle.

You
have to add them to a circle. Just make a new one called 'randoms' or something.
Remember when you post a status update you can selectively choose which circles will recieve it so all the stuff you share with friends won't be visible to everyone.
