I wouldn't read into it if anyone else was doing it, Apple TV has been a massive failure in my eyes in terms of design, implementation and sales.

It makes an XBMC box, and it's the first that's available for under £100, at that. I'd hardly call it a "failure".

You could turn a sub £100 Xbox (original) into an XBMC box ;)

Yeah... if you don't mind that it's not capable of running the latest version of XBMC or playing back HD media. or that you'll have trouble displaying it discreetly in a living room or that you'll never be able to hear your media over the sound of the original Xbox's turbines.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/07/goog ... ew-tvs-by/

Google big dog Eric Schmidt covered a lot of ground in his onstage interview at Le Web this year, but it wasn't all about iOS vs. Ice Cream Sandwich. It appears that Big G has big plans for Google TV, and the Executive Chairman foresees the platform proliferating to the point that "most" new televisions will have it embedded by the summer of 2012 -- that rumored switch from x86 to ARM must be going well. That strikes us as an awfully lofty goal given it's light market penetration thus far, but with Samsung still on board the Google gravy train and others waiting in the wings, Schmidt just may be right. However, until we see just how many sets are packing Google TV at CES, our skepticism remains -- check the interview itself and another video after the break that encapsulates just how we feel

Google TV adds LG to portfolio

http://m.engadget.com/default/article.d ... latest_art

The second round of Google TV hardware will be in full swing at CES 2012, and the folks at Mountain View just officially announced LG is joining the list of hardware partners at the show. While we know Logitech was taking a pass on the latest hardware, previously announced partners Samsung, Sony and Vizio are still in and the latter two will have new hardware to show next week. While this morning's announcement by Marvell revealed the platform's switch to ARM processors from the Intel chips it launched on, the company mentioned MediaTek is also on board to build compatible chipsets, while the line of products from LG will run on the company's own L9 setup.

Sounds gooseberry fool and they're to late to the party now.

How are they late to the party? It's hardly like the market's saturated is it.

As for this 'flopping' the original Android wasn't exactly spectacular was it. Android now has 50% of the smartphone market.

Supposedly they're more likely than Apple to bid for live Premier League matches next season. Which would be a coup.

The techie people who buy into this stuff already had this kind of thing 5+ years ago. The average consumer will end up with something supplied by Virgin Media or Sky.

I don't really see where the market is for this :?

People who don't want a Sky/Virgin subscription?

People who don't already have a 'smart TV'?

90% of which probably wouldn't bother with this anyway, which doesn't leave much of a business for a big company.

From Google's perspective, it makes sense to give Android the functionality, irrespective of whether or not it ends up in a TV, or in your mobile. From a TV manufacturer perspective, it's a low cost way of adding robust smart-TV functionality.

The first generation of Android phones did relatively well though and was quickly followed up by a second wave of product announcements at the next MWC. The first generation of GoogleTV reviewed terribly and performed so poorly Logitechs CEO ended up losing his job because it did so much damage to the company and Google got its partners to pull products from the CES 2011 showfloor just before it started because the software was generating such negative feedback.

I'm surprised Microsoft haven't come out with a Smart TV platform yet. Something like the latest Xbox dashboard would work well with a remote, and there's already a load of TV apps for it.

Thats because they are idiots. If there was a roku-like app-store announced for the 360 tomorrow it would dominate the smart tv market.

Indeed, if this supposed iOS TV from Apple launches this year then, just as they were with smartphones and tablets, Microsoft will be late to the party through short sightedness.

They started in 2005 with Media Center, which enthusiasts have expanded upon and made a proper full solution.

I can see Windows 8 dominating this particular market.
