All I can say is I'm glad I live where I do, I mean it could be better, but still not as bad as what's happening where you are.

If something posed an actual threat to someone out there, then I would say that a ban might be justified, however in this case they're banning things that just might seem realistic.

Indeed. That stuff is, of course, strawberry floating sick, but as long as you don't fall into the buyer or re-distributor categories I'm not sure possession of any image, even images as reprehensible as those described by Skarjo above, should be a crime.

That being said, if you're found with that sort of shite on your PC you should probably be made to see a shrink as something is wrong with you. Same could be said for the bestiality really. Still, outing and criminalising perhaps isn't fair.

EDIT: I wonder how many government watchlists I'm going to be put on for publicly stating such a hideously liberal opinion.

They ban possession because if no one is allowed to posses it, no one can distribute it. Possession is clear cut, but try proving who distributed a torrent. And because by owning something you are at the very least benefiting in some way from an illegal act. How you acquired it doesn't change any of that.

I've got 100 odd Manga and Anime combined I'm in deep deep gooseberry fool if this goes through. Funny thing is not one of the anime is rated 18 (Yeah I know I'm doing it wrong) and only three Manga are rated Mature. Hell my Avril Lavigne live DVD has a stricter BBFC rating than half my Anime.

:fp:

Actually is this coming into force north of the border? I could've sworn this kind of business was a devolved matter.

I'm starting to dominate this thread a bit, which indicates too much focus on one person playing devil's advocate. I'll leave the should possession equal crime bit for now. What I will respond to is this:

Anyone with a seeding ratio of 1 or greater has in theory redistributed a copy of the whatever's-being-downloaded. Tracker logs can show the IPs of anyone who's got that ratio or higher.

They won't be banning all manga/anime, just the hardcore/disgusting tentacle rape/GBH Bondage/night shift nurses kind of stuff. I doubt they're going to bust in and take your Love Hina, Naruto or Gundam yet alone your Ghibli movies.

As for why it's wrong to possess bestiality/child rape pictures, if someone has it then they must want it, if they want it then others will too and thus you have a demand. Where there's a demand they'll soon be a supply and that's what the government wants to stop.

What.

There is nothing wrong with most Hentai, fair enough I don't really look at the stuff, but it's hardly a case of if people see Tentacle rape they're going to try it in real life is it.

Tentacle rape is believe it or not, the 'soft' side of hentai. There are a lot out there that are about simply abusing people for sexual pleasure, and not depicted as the consenting adults that participate in kinky sex in real life.

I'm not sure how this'll be enforced. Isn't viewing things on someone's computer without their consent illegal? So you can't exactly have the police looking at everyone's computers - it's hypocrisy at its worst.

They can't ban manga, since 'manga' is just Japanese for comic book. Either they would have to ban all comics or draw up a specific law about where the comics are created, which would look incredibly xenophobic. Also, there are several magor television networks who would have something to say if the state stopped them showing some of the highest rating kid's shows.

It's hard to tell quite what's going on, even if I tilt my laptop slightly to the right and squint a bit but I reckon that'd probably get you at least a month in the slammer for being a filthy degenerate piece of scum.

Consultation on the Possession of Non-Photographic Visual Depictions of Child Sexual Abuse, Summary of responses and next steps (June 2007) wrote:The creation of a new offence of the possession of cartoons, drawings, computer
generated images and other material which depicts, or appears to depict, child sexual
abuse is a significant step. It is recognised that these images, unlike those produced in the
making of indecent photographs of children, do not involve harm to real children in their
creation, and the Government has further deliberated on the proposals, in the light of the
comments put forward... It is important, in this changing environment, that the law is
responsive and remains fully equipped to protect the public, and, in particular, the most
vulnerable members of society. We continue to believe that tightening up the law to cover
possession of such material is justified
.

In the consultation, it was proposed that there should be a maximum penalty of three years’
imprisonment, or an unlimited fine, or both for possession of material depicting non-photographic
visual depictions of child sexual abuse. The offence will be an either way offence and, on summary
conviction, the maximum penalty will be six months, or a fine up
to the statutory maximum (currently £5,000), or both.

You have remember, this is the UK Government consulting with child protection professionals on the question of criminalising the possession of CG imagery, cartoons and drawings: NOT photographs = not real children. For being found in possession of any such drawings (such as hentai, yaoi or shota, you can expect to face three years in prison (CEOP, of course, favour five years - the same for being found in possession of REAL CP; you know, involving actual human beings), a place on the Sex Offenders Register and the complete and utter end of your life, job, relationship, family and home as you know it.

The really scary thing is that the above consultation paper is already over a year old. God alone knows how much closer we are now to this new law being brought in. And it WILL be brought in.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

It's still hardly all Manga and it will involve other types of art work. I don't agree with the law but you way over hyping what's being proposed. Also calling in all Manga is a touch racist the Japanese have produced some manga with non sexulised children in.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Personally speaking, I find quite a lot of these drawings quite disgusting & vulgar anyway.

It's clearly different cultures & what not, but I don't particularly understand why they have to depict such graphic scenes involving children.
