not to flog a dead horse but i think people dont give science fiction a chance, as it has a nerdy and lame image.
its quite pretentious, but Harlan Ellison advised calling it 'speculative fiction' instead of 'science fiction' which i think fits a lot better for what the genre is actually about, i.e. inventing scenarios (whether alternative/futuristic etc.) that then create interesting and novel human interaction scenarios https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/jun/14/harlan-ellison-q-and-a-interview

Cool interview, guy sounds really interesting. Was a great read so thanks for the choice.

This one's physical only unless you know French Errkal. I'm actually gonna pass on this one, don't even have a fixed address at the moment so getting something posted woud be a total nightmare. Although I do feel a bit bad because I think it might only be Parksey doing Zazie.

Also finish Stars, imo it only gets better.

ahh ok, I'm going to have to pass this one purely because the idea of getting a physical book weirds me out.

Yeah, I'll be doing Zazie - just need to finish the last 100 pages or so of my current book, which has taken a bit longer than planned due to the Switch hogging my bedtime reading time.

Errkal, just buy a paper book you mentalist. A Kindle is tremendously convenient but I much prefer having a physical copy, even if it is going to be a pain shipping these ones back to the UK.

Surprised there isn't an eBook anyway though. Is it a particularly famous French novel? Not a genre I usually dabble in.

Going forward, if the majority are reliant on electronic copies, we should make sure each title is available in that format. I presume 99.9% of most of our choices will be, mind.

That's really weird. But yeah for future novels I'll make sure there are e-versions available.

Didn't read.

I read as a kid, but when I left school I pretty much stopped having to use paper for anything as only start reading about 4 years ago when I got a kindle.

this guy. just unbelievable.

its not just books, if I have to do a paper form I either get the wife to fill it in, or don't have whatever it is I needed to do the form to get. I'm also pretty much the same with anything I need to do on the phone. Why do I need to phone, email and IM exist!

I'll be reading Zazie, too, but still need to finish Stars, first. I'm looking forward to it though, sounds really interesting. Also, it's really short, so that should give me a chance to catch up.

Errkal, you're strawberry floating weird. Get over it and just get a physical copy.

Zazie just isn't for me, I've done about 4 chapters and I really don't like it. I'm sure the translation is well regarded but I just keep grinding to a halt when they hit the colloquial language. Also, am I just being over sensitive or is there a certain amount of sexualisation of Zazie?

What's coming up next?

I've only read the first two chapters but I got a whiff off that too. Don't they mention something like "I don't want her to get raped by the whole family" which struck me as a bit strange.

At the moment, it's not my type of book either, but saying that, it's fairly easy to read and should be able to get through it.

Ive been distracted with other things so am hopelessly behind. Feel free to take my book out of the order.

If anyone wants to buy my copy of Zazie then I'm open to offers in the £5 area (inc. UK delivery). I really don't see myself finishing it or wanting to read it at a later date.

Not feeling too bad about skipping it now, Irene has forsaken us all.

It was meant to be another French novel (The Elegance of the Hedgehog) but I'll shift that one back so that some people aren't reading two similar in tone novels one after another.

Which means that the next choice is: The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscars Wilde


Which will be followed by: 'All My Friends are Superheroes' by Andrew Kaufman

To be honest I can't remember who chose The Picture of Dorian Grey and can't be bothered looking through all my PM's but it's a good choice; one of my favourite short stories in existance. Brilliantly written, strong moral message and as far as I remember very short: no excuse for skipping this one!

I'll get links up for both The Picture of Dorian Grey and Kaufman's book in a bit.
