It's a good call. At least two books and then we're good for a few weeks.

Mine is en route. Get stuck into that. If it grabs me it wont take more than a couple of days or so - depending on how many distractions take place.

I'm unlikely to do much talking about the book, or read discussion on it, until I've actually finished it, myself. Feels a bit premature otherwise.

I've never really done a book club before, so I'm not sure what the usual etiquette is for when you start discussion on it.

Yeah strawberry float knows what the normal etiquette is, as long as everything's spoilered I guess it doesn't matter too much if we do it during or after.

I've PM'd Banjo and Parksey the next 8 so they can prepare accordingly for abroad, if others want I can send it to them as well. I do think it's more interesting if we drip feed them slightly though as I'm sure there'll be a couple of unpopular ones in there as well.

So people can prepare for the next month/month and a half I'll say the next two as well:

The book we'll be reading after Kurkov is:

"The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester (<]:^D's pick)

Following that will be:

Zazie in the Metro by Raymond Queneau. (Irene's pick)

I'll obviously add more on these closer to the time but that's the pick.

Anyone wanting stuff shipped abroad (or even for those in the UK), you should check out the Book Depository.

Never used them before, but just stuck an order in, as if they ship to you country, it's all free and isn't too bad (Japan is 7-10 business days, but others are quicker). Prices seem cheaper than Amazon too.

Doesn't look like Zazie in the Metro is available on Kindle (unless I'm missing something).

It is in French but not English. Hopefully the Irene method will work :D

Are the Irene versions proper e-books (like, in the proper format, with a cover etc) or are they different? I'll need to download the first book anyway as the physical copy likely won't arrive in time (I'm away next week anyway), but some of the out-of-copyright classics I download to my
Kindle are a bit "wall-of-text-y" and not adapted for the electronic format at all.

EDIT - Zazie is available on Book Depository and for about £6 by the looks of it, if the price in Yen is anything to go by.

Yeah they are proper books with covers or at least it is on iBooks where I have imported it.

I can't say I've have any issues with kindle being as you say wall of texts but I've been buying from kindle and they look like the book in page layout and stuff.

The Irene ones should be the same in kindle as you convert the ePub to mobi in calibre to read on a kindle.

I'll have a look when I've got some free time.

That Kurkov one's well adapted for the Kindle, looks perfect.

Does the Irene method require a laptop to get going? Haven't looked into yet, but I only have a tablet at home, so I've brought my Kindle to work today. Might have a sneaky read if I'm free...

You need an IRC client so probably. If you send me your kindle email I'll just mail you the book.

Well I was meant to be working until 10pm, but adverse weather and my bike falling to pieces forced me home early. Guess I'll be having a good read tonight. :)

although I'd got it pegged that there were 2 plot strands, the Russian names mean I'm struggling to follow who the incidental characters are in each strand. I mean, who the strawberry float is Georgy?

I finished it last night and still had that problem :slol:

especially when the two strands join together for the last few chapters.

It's a fun book, though. I think I'll have to read through it again at some point to really get a handle on what happens. I thought the Viktor guy was going to end up hunting for the Nik fella and them having some kind of shootout but then they just team up to get the money and the book ends, so I think I might have missed something somewhere :shifty:
