Super Mario Kart (SNES) - amazing. I remember the first time I played this, all of the little neat touches coupled with a great racing game.
Actraiser (SNES) - brilliant combination of 2D action game meets strategy. 20+ years later I can still remember the tune.
Eternal Darkness (GC) - had this game for several months before I played it, in part because I'd played Resident Evil remake on the GC, didn't enjoy it and heard ED was a "survival horror". Absolutely loved the idea that each chapter was just about an hour long and was perfect for the amount of time I had available at that time. For anyone who has a GC or Wii and has never played this, pick it up.
F-Zero GX (GC) - utterly brilliant racer. Graphically amazing and the number 1 future racer.
Resident Evil 4 (GC) - really wasn't that fussed about this (based on experience of various RE games) but this is utterly excellent. This is the only game I can think of where I didn't want it to end.

Yes?

One of the best Zeldas. Wonderful gameplay and great puzzles

Image
Such an amazing game, all the various routes AND WITH RUMBLE. I don't know why but it doesn't feel the same on 3DS

Image
Best Metroid bar none. Bought this for a coach journey and just got lost in it. Never actually completed it untill this year on the 3ds virtual console

Image
MK64 - no other reason needed. It's the best MK. Great fun playing this with 4 friends just sat together

Image
It's a great game and a brand new take on an old character. The flying scenes in this to me represent what a new Starfox could be like

Wow, Dig Dug... this thread is going to be mighty! I'd like to start with one of my favourite titles.

Robotron 64 (Nintendo 64)

I suspect this game won't feature in the overall Top 200 but I feel that it should do. Robotron 64 was hugely unfashionable when it arrived on the Nintendo 64 in 1998. The gameplay was retro and the graphics, although dragged from their 2D origins into 3D, did not appear attractive in magazines screenshots. The only concession to 90s gaming fashion was the amazing music and in (for most gamers) the pre-internet days this aspect couldn't easily be appreciated. The game garnered unimpressive reviews and it quickly faded into obscurity.

Which is a real shame as it's tremendous. I shy away from most re-makes and re-imaginings as they often lose all sense of the original game. Robotron 2084 stands as a legend in arcade gaming and to attempt to bring it into the late 90s was always going to be challenging. But the risk paid off with Robotron 64. Smooth, intuitive gamplay; simple yet dynamic graphics; stunning rave soundtracks and plenty of levels... it's all packed into this game.

Not everyone will appreciate its charms and I can see how the blocky appearance and basic style will deter many gamers. Even so, for those who enjoy a retro style and who would be eager to soak up the amazing sense of immersion and that feeling of 'being in the zone', it's definitely worth seeking out the cart and slamming it into your old N64.

The game features several stunning 90s 'rave' style tracks; here's the title tune called "Maximum Power":

Certainly a decent choice. Robotron in it's various forms is a genuine classic.

oh, and on the subject of games that get in on their soundtrack alone before the gameplay is even taken into account

Put a list in the op. I'll get my five for today out of the way now because I'm going away for a few days.

F-Zero X (N64)
Wave Race 64 (N64)
Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
Soul Calibur II (Gamecube)
Earthworm Jim 2 (SNES) (We do not talk about the GBA version)

I'll do the fancy descriptions and gooseberry fool on another day, I'm in a hurry.

Ok here we go in no particular order

Super Mario World SNES - In my eyes the best 2d mario game ever, It just about beats Super mario bros 3 for me
Image

cybernator SNES - This was back when konami were amazing and a game like this had never really been seen at the time, being able to play as a huge mech was amazing and the detail was brilliant for a 16 bit pixel game.
Image

Double Dragon 2 NES - I loved this version of double dragon 2 , i think it differed from the arcade version but was brilliant in my eyes, it was also tough as hell and the final areas were strawberry floating evil to get through. It was also a 2 player co-op sidescrolling beat em up which was fairly rare at the time.

Image

Legend Of Zelda Links Awakening Gameboy - I remember being about 12-13 years old playing this on my sofa and i on purposely got a battery charger pack for the GB as i played the game so much i kept using up all the batteries. It was also quite amazing how Nintendo managed to get the game looking so good when it was using a very simple colour scale and the music was some of the best.

Image

Secret of Mana SNES - was one of the best rpg's i had ever played and also the first to have 3 player simultaneous co-op play. The amount of hours i spent on this game as well was insane and i also completed it. I have no idea how long it took as it didn't track that but it must have been in the hundreds. The levelling , weapons , enemies and story was amazing and being able to co-op with a friend for a large part of it was perfect.

It's not actually made by Konami. It was published through them, but the developer was NCS, and they made some really great games on both systems. Gynoug on the MegaDrive, and the SNES port of Prince of Persia, among others.

But yes, the level of detail is quite brilliant. The amount of detail in the suits is great and the fact that the terrain actually becomes battle damaged as you fight is an amazing touch for the 16bit systems.

I've actually been playing a fan-translation of the Japanese game, Assault Suits Valken [the Aeon Genesis one], because it restores some cut content, like character dialogue pictures. The censorship employed in the western version is... really quite odd.

I only know because I had Assault Suit Leynos on the Megadrive. It was years before I found out there was a PAL version of that too (Target: Earth), and that there were actual sequels to both games.

As well as a sort of semi-sequelish thing called Metal Warriors (by Lucasarts of all companies).

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Let's start with this. Retro took, what felt like a pretty perfect platformer and polished it beyond all believe improving it in pretty much every aspect. The graphics: amazing, the music: amazing, the controls: amazing, the multiple characters: amazing. Easily my favourite game of the year (based on what I've beaten, not calendar) beating out such greats as Mass Effect, GTA 5 and the mighty Super Mario 3D World. This game is everything a platformer should be and... I wouldn't be unhappy if Retro were currently making a third game (there, I said it!)

Kid Icarus: Uprising

This game just oozes personality. The Saturday morning cartoon vibe is something that I didn't know I wanted from a video game. Constantly breaking the fourth wall, with cute, chirpy and always funny dialog, I long for a sequel on Wii U. The only downside for me were the controls, but I learnt to live with them, and ultimately the gameplay, story and sheer premise of the bottom screen characters talking win out for me.

Mario Kart Wii

This is the first time in my life that gaming transcended just me and a few close friends who actually played. Wii Sports might have been the game that people first wanted to try, but I had people I never imagined playing games, coming over and demanding to play this. It's probably not the tightest MK game, but it's the most accessible and the one I've spent the most time with. My life's moved on since those days but I'll always hold it dear when I think back to it.
