In America I believe there's a box on the front, but here in Europe there's nothing:

If servers or Internet are down, you’re stuck in “Arcade” mode with no saves.

On Tuesday, October 17, the long-awaited Gran Turismo Sport arrives for the Playstation 4. This seventh installment of one of the world's best-selling games franchises introduces a number of updates designed for high-end TVs, virtual reality, and e-sports enthusiasts. Although we've had a copy for a few days now, you'll have to wait a few more days to read a proper review.

In large part, that's because Sony's Gran Turismo Sport servers were down for the past few days. Since being connected to those servers is such an integral part of the game, there's very little left to do if you're offline.

But let's not pretend like we weren't warned. In a blog post last month, Sony revealed that "[i]n order to ensure fair racing for all, GT Sport will require an Internet connection for the majority of functionality. This connectivity requirement is to ensure that progress, car availability, and driver ratings are properly maintained at all times."

Now we know what "the majority of functionality" means: everything other than "Arcade" mode. This means you can take part in one-off races against the AI, time trials, "drift trials," split-screen two-player battles, and the limited VR mode. And you'll only have access to cars and racetracks you unlocked while you were online.

If the servers are down or your PS4 is not connected to the Internet, no other parts of the game are available and no progress can be saved. (This means you'll lose any in-game credits or level progression earned in Arcade mode.) Obviously, online matches depend on the servers. But so, too, does the rest of the game—stuff that has always been available offline in the past. Campaign mode (the career mode that includes the notorious Gran Turismo driving school) is off limits while offline. Also unavailable offline: buying new cars, viewing your garage, editing car liveries, and even the "taking photos of fancy cars in exotic scenery" mode.

The reasoning behind the move has to do with the linkup between Gran Turismo and the FIA, the international organization that runs world motorsport. FIA-recognized e-sports are an integral part of the game, so keeping everyone's saves in the cloud is meant to keep everyone honest and above-board. But the move raised eyebrows in the Ars office as offline single-player content in console games is rarely restricted in this manner.

When asked why Polyphony Digital chose to restrict so much usual Gran Turismo content to online-only use, a Sony representative referred us to the September blog post announcing the change. "The local save only contains hardware settings such as monitor resolution/HDR calibration, etc.," the rep added.

Do you need PlayStation plus for this to work? Obvs not online racing but for the rest of it

Its nice to get back to this; the motion controls feel good, it looks good and the pile of cars from the digital deluxe edition certainly opens up a lot more options.

There are lots of neat little touches which impress me - in the editor you can paint certain trim areas separately; a huge improvement over having to improvise with layers like in forza. There are many times more sponsor logos too, as well as a bevy of fictional logos too which is nice. I'm looking forward to the user logos going live, although they appear to be limited to 15kb svg files which may mean some bigger and more intricate designs may have to be chopped up or altered.

Its a tiny thing, but just having a guy waving a chequered flag at the end of the race is a great touch, one i've never noticed in any forza before.

I don't believe so, no.

I was going to pick this up from Argos with the controller today as I've got some vouchers but by half 9 it was listed as sold out already! If that's any indication, this thing is going to do amazingly well.

Oh well, gives me an excuse later to crack open a brand new copy of Gran Turismo...

As I found out in the demo, if the servers are down you can't save the game, which means leaving the game and system running (or presumably in a suspended state, though I've never tried it) or lose all your progress - though I suppose it'd only be about 10 minutes worth or something, because then the modes wouldn't work.

As design decisions go, it's not a great one. I think their excuse is something to do with FIA rules.

In the demo, you could force it to save when the servers were down by going to the garage and changing your car.

Good to see. I know the ability to make your own decals (and upload them to the servers) is coming soon to the game. I'll be very interested to investigate that aspect. I have a few ideas already for 'themed' cars - perhaps we could run a competition for the best 'GRcade' themed car design? Just an idea.

Some of the grcade made decals for Forza are excellent.

I'll definitely have a go at a GRcade themed car and I also quite fancy doing an Nvidia one, too. A lot of scope there to get creative with Photoshop and Illustrator. :)

Some thoughts:

- The driving is as incredible as ever. GT's continued focus on tyre modelling and grip above all else pays off in making it feel convincing and terrifying at high speeds. You're always teetering on the edge of going off the track and ruining your whole race. It's demanding and thrilling.
- The presentation is typically classy, and the visuals (particularly the lighting) are excellent. I'm playing on a 4K HDR display on a Pro and the moments where I am convinced I'm watching a real video play are disarmingly frequent.
- I'm not at all sad the traditional campaign mode is gone. I mean, when it comes down to it, the whole mode basically distilled down to "soup up this car so it's above and beyond the competition, then casually sail to victory" after the initial grind for credits was done. Now that it's just there to teach you how to race, it feels way more useful as a lead-in to competing against others.
- The aggressive stance against shitlord drivers is great. Issuing time penalties against people for bad behaviour, coupled with having an overall "sportsmanship" rank that matches considerate drivers with other considerate drivers, is fantastic. And forcing everyone to watch a few videos on how to not be a dickhead online before they can access those modes is smart. Even if someone ignores the rules and bulls you out of the way, you still get your sweet justice at the end of the race when the penalty times are tacked on and they fall way behind you on the grid.

You can, at times, feel hard done by. Receiving a minor penalty for getting charged into, or getting punished harshly for accidentally slamming into someone because they were too eager on the brakes or driving erratically can feel a little unfair.

But the key parts of the videos to remember are:
1. Be aware of new racers that might not be used to the track, car or rules, and act accordingly.
2. Avoid a collision at all costs, even if it means you have to leave the track to do it.

Essentially, forget about racing position at first. When you've proved you can race fairly and safely, you'll find that you're matched with others who do the same. In the launch window, the matchmaking is going to be a little all over the place, but as people's ranks level out, it should end up being excellent.

The servers went down for maintenance last night which left only Arcade AI races available and that sucks, tbh. There's no good reason the campaign can't also have been made available offline. Even if it was planned maintenance it would have been okay, but it just happened suddenly and without warning, locking down the whole game.

I also was very proud to have clinched pole position in one of the Sport races, but ended up blowing it and coming 9th.
