GT5 and 6 played like the previous games; lacklustre sound effects, robotic AI and workable visuals, however the framerate takes a dip if you use in-car view, so it's bumpercam or external for stable/fast visuals.

The problem i've always had with GT is its very clinical, po-faced and joyless. The game presents itself as an automotive museum with no sense of fun (skip to 1:37):

Compare this to a replay from the first GRID, which makes every race look, sound and feel like the most important race in the entire strawberry floating world:

I used to love it, but it really hasn't moved forward despite how much corporate schmoozing Kaz does.

There is definitely something missing with Gran Turismo these days. It definitely peaked with GT3. Still felt relevant the following year with that Geneva edition. But by the time GT4 rolled around it's like a shift had occurred and PGR2 and Burnout 3 was where it was at. And by the time the Xbox 360 racked up, PGR3 & 4 had completely taken its place. GT always had the graphics argument - Forza could never compete, but then that's now changed to.

Hard to forget though how Gran Turismo used to be part of that quad of racers on PSone (TOCA, Colin, F1 and GT) that were just the best games in the entire world.

I think that looks better than DriveClub and I'm glad there is an on-screen track map, something I wish was on DriveClub.

Yes?

I couldn't watch the live presentation, was anything said about PSVR?
GT Sport is big budget 2D game and it would be good to know how that translates to VR (as opposed to a made for VR experience).

This is precisely why I have never enjoyed the series. When it first emerged, people liked to call it the Pokemon of racers (because you had to collect all the cars/parts?), which always made me think if only it took itself about as seriously as Pokemon took itself!

I quite liked the later intros as well:

I wasn't into the GT5 intro with MCR, but it grew on me:

I'm only interested in the VR so I really hope they do that justice.
This may be one of the games where the Neo may be highly recommended as I can see its fast pace being rather taxing on the hardware.

Well there is a track map on Driveclub so I'm guessing the answer to that is yes.

What the? It doesn't look better than Driveclub and from what I've seen it doesn't even look as good as a certain other driving franchise. :shifty:

Actually, might be right. I think my gripe with DriveClub is that I have to avert my eyes from the race to check for the corners.

I just think that the gif looks quite good, the background detail and the chalk on the road seemed like a nice touch. But I bow to your superior DriveClub knowledge gained through countless hours of playing the game.

Or you could learn the track layout after a few tries and git gud.

That relies on remembering the tracks, which I don't really like to have to do. Work etc.

So you want the map in the middle of the screen?

Do you have trouble remembering layouts of levels in games? Maps in racing games are a crutch, if you turn it off you'll have a mental map of the track within a few laps and be waaaay better than if you just look at a map and bounce off the corners.

In that case perhaps racing isn't the right genre for you if memory/repetition/practice aren't your things.
