Good to hear online is something to look forward to. Definitely want to go into online races with a really good knowledge of the tracks though, which I’m still working on.

Thankfully the stuff I’m doing now is also really enjoyable.

With the sportsmanship rating in the forefront of everyone's mind, cleanly overtaking a closely-matched opponent is a thrill like no other. Seeing a rival buckle under your pressure and spin out to give you an easy pass is pure joy. The elation of getting pole then the immediate fear as realisation kicks in that all eyes are on you.

It's a testament to how excellent the racing is that I can start 12th, finish 10th, and still feel like I "won". Or where even finishing last can be an achievement if you drove well.

If you're D or E ranked for SR, yes, you will encounter some idiots, but above that, the fear of being thrown back down with the dicks is enough to keep everyone in check. Your SR is precious, and crucially, it's not related to your results. You could come butt last in every race you run, but still end up with the most considerate members of the community.

That is what's driving me to keep going online and trying to improve compared to forza which is a shitshow by default. I think a big problem is that the career modes in most racing games prioritise winning to progress, and that progression lacks long-term consequences or context. Winning is great but look at most real motorsports; how many GT3 or F1 drivers win at all, let alone on a regular basis? This is something that gt sport will hopefully address to some degree.

This is what I like about PCars 1 & 2. It's not about bumping your way to the front of the pack just to unlock some pointless guff and another car you'll only ever look at once. Yes winning is great, but in a race career that's not always a reality and coming in further down the pack, or not completing a race at all due to blow outs, engine failure or technical errors, is real racing.

Having recognisable and long-term other drivers makes for emergent storytelling through rivalries and battles for points over a period of time. I might give pcars2 a try and nudge for it for xmas or something.

Just completed my 2nd online race the 10 lap gr 3 race at the Nurburgring did quali which i got pole for by over 4 seconds 2.02 2nd was 2.06 got into the race and i got rammed at the first corner and i fell down to 8th.
I knew just by my quali times i had an advantage so i just paced myself and took my time over taking everyone passing everyone one or 2 still rammed me as i got past but as soon i got past i was long gone as i was faster then them. Got up to 3rd where for a few laps i battled to get past him was a good fair battle i outbraked myself at one point but within half a lap i was back on his tail halfway around the next lap he made a mistake coming out of one of the corners and i overtook him

I then managed to catch up to 1st place but never managed to get past we was close up to the flag. Was a good race apart from the few idiots who rammed others of the track other then those it few was a clean race i enjoyed it.

Haven't opened my copy yet, but I'm curious as to how well the system in place deals with man-children who think GTS is bumper cars?

I'm guessing, and given the nature of GTS, such players will have perhaps moved on in the long run? Do you get that impression?

How the system works depending on your ranking you get paired with people to the same rating as you. But if you drive cleanly avoid bad driving etc your rating goes up and you get paired with people the same as you ie less people who ram into at corners or deliberately ram you. I'm E at the moment but i just went into the race to drive cleanly avoid contact etc.

As Jiggles said in this post

I cannot imagine ignoring the online in this. It's strawberry floating incredible.

I agree to all of that.

That does sound like a fantastic way of doing things.

Think I've said before, but I'm going to continue my PCars 2 campaign for a bit before breaking the seal on GTS. Something to look forward to. :)

I'm slowly making my way through all the campaign stuff. Figured I best do all of that before doing online racing as I just can't get the hang of using a standard controller for controlling the car. Still too many times when I steer too much into a corner, or go too easy on the brakes and end up losing tonnes of time.

Try using the motion steering - its not as good as a proper wheel but its better than just using the left stick.

Had my best result this evening; audi tt road car race on the japanese track i can't remember the name of. Qualified 6th, finished 5th, was up to 4th at one point. I'm rated D B, the slow but safe group.

Some help please, ventured online thinking I set a really good time and I was 5 seconds off the quickest person and when the race started everyone just sailed past me without even trying. I’m assuming it’s somethin to do with the set up of the car because I hit every corner nicely yet whilst in the same car I couldn’t get near anyone and even got lapped

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [92h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Westonbirt Half (March), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

There are people who are just frighteningly good - as such it will take a massive dollop of git gud to catch up because they are setting amazing quali times and therefore just pulling away. A wheel is pretty much mandatory for the top echelons as you need to feel the tyre grip and other things to know how to place the car.

As such for me it took a concerted personal shift in expectations; obviously do my best but realise that winning all the time, as every singleplayer racing teaches us to do, doesn't happen against other people for everyone. Now i'm focusing on building safety rating and trying to finish at least one place ahead of where i started or at least not lose any for silly reasons.

Eurogamer wrote:Gran Turismo Sport is getting its first major update since its release last month, with a sizeable and more traditional single player campaign coming alongside a suite of new cars in December.

GT League is reminiscent of older Gran Turismo games, featuring a series of cup competitions and endurance races - and addressing one of the criticisms of Gran Tursimo Sport, which instead offered an in-depth and extensive tutorial alongside a series of missions.

There will also be new cars inbound, with Audi's final R18 that saw it bow out of the WEC being joined by a new Vision GT car as well as a Shelby Cobra. Alongside those headline additions, 12 new cars are also coming in the free December update, and see the return of some of the exotica and more eccentric vehicles of Gran Turismo alongside Sport's more race-tuned selection. Here's those cars in full:

Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD)
Nissan Skyline GT-R V・spec II (R32)
Nissan Skyline GT-R V・spec II Nür (R34)
Ford F-150 SVT Raptor
Lamborghini Countach LP400
Ferrari F40
Ferrari Enzo Ferrari
KTM X-BOW R
Suzuki Swift Sport
Volkswagen Sambabus Typ 2 (T1)
Chris Holstrom Concepts 1967 Chevy Nova
Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible (C3)

It's good to see that the game is being expanded, especially with the addition of a single-player mode.

I must be in the minority, but I wish racing games would include "normal" cars as well as supercars. I'd rather charge around a track in an old Ford Sierra or even an Escort rather than £400k Ferraris.

I didn't play GT6, but if it's anything like GT5 this will be a game that gradually gets better and more substantial over time, to probably become the game some (many?) would have liked it to be on Day 1.

At £25 it's a bargain; max discount you're looking at an additional £5 off (I could easily see it popping up in Sony's 12 Deals of Christmas event).

The problem is that racetracks are so wide to account for the high speeds that it's super boring to be driving an average car around them.

Anyway, the actual championships are in progress now (though I think today is an off-day), and it's an extremely good setup. You basically get one shot at the race in the time period each day. You have free practice while waiting for the event, but unlike with the other Sport races, your time doesn't count here. Instead, everyone enters an official 10 minute qualifying session together and you have to manage the traffic to set your best hot lap, before the starting grid parade and race proper. You get points for each round that go towards your championship total (during these test seasons, that's a week long). Two flavours of championship are ongoing: in one, you race for your country, and in the other, you register with a car manufacturer and race for them.

It's a setup that's flexible enough to handle at your leisure, while being structured and regulated enough to feel like it actually counts for something.

Glad to hear - i must admit i've fallen off the online racing part, i can get a few races in a night and mostly end up at the back - my safety rating is going up nicely but after a couple of late entries and setting bad quali times my driver rating is at the bottom of D again. I don't mind not winning but i don't have the time necessary to git gud anymore, or the money/space for a proper wheel.
