PostGRcade Game Club - Choose the game for May
by Red Devil » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:01 pm

Had this idea over the Easter break and wanted to see how much interest it got.

There are loads of classic and underrated classic games that cost about a fiver these days and i thought it'd be a good idea for everyone to play these games if they haven't already or revisit them again and see how well they hold up from what they remember of them.

Each game would have to have some sort of multiplayer side to it (like Age of Empires 2 having the 8 player online mode) and we could meet up once a week for a month to play the game online with each other. After that month's over, a new game from a different genre could be picked and everyone would play that for a month and so on and so forth. Some sort of league could also be set up to see who's good at what type of game or just to add a competitive edge to it.

Since the games would be fairly old, everyone would have a computer more than capable of running them and they'd be well within budget of most people as well. If you're interested then post here and maybe recommend a game or two you wouldn't mind playing.

Ideas for Games:
Worms - Worms 2 £3.49 from Play (FD), Worms 3D £4.45 from Play (FD)
Age of Empires - AoE 2 £4.99 from Play (FD), AoE1 £4.91 from Amazon (FD)
Delta Force - All Available for under £5 at Play (FD)
Red Alert - Red Alert 2 £3.90 from Amazon (FD), Red Alert Original £2.90 from Amazon
Freelancer - £3.95 from Play (FD)
Civilization - Civ 3 Complete £4.99 from Amazon (FD)

(FD = Free Delivery)

(Not sure if it's the right place but it's the busiest place so could it perhaps be left here for a while to get some interest or until it sinks in to the abyss?)

I think this is a fantastic idea, and would enjoy taking part. Hopefully others show interest.

Yeah. Usually with old games you have an elite few who are so good it's like they're cheating at the game. Hopefully if enough people say they're up for it, everyone will be on a relatively similar skill level and they'll enjoy the game more.

We should play Freelancer, another classic, and most people should be able to manage it.

I'll no doubt be rubbish compared to other people, but it should be good fun.

I'd be up for that, that would be an ace idea.

Probably my favourite FPS series. I think we should get some games of at least one from the series if there's enough interest.

Updated the first post with those who've said they're up for it as well as what games could be used. Lewis? Killaroo? You want your name on the list as well?

If anyone's got any games they want to play then post them as well.

Red Alert and Worms! I'm up for this but I've got exams in 2 weeks so won't be free until mid-May.

That's cool. I've got exams and essays due in all over the place next month so could spare 4 nights of it just chilling out playing a game. I expect people will drop in and out depending on what's going on in their lives. Ideally want to keep it as flexible as possible.

Searched around for prices and picked a couple of games out of those with 5 or 6 in the series just so everyone gets an idea of how much they'd be looking at paying and stuck it in the first post.

I'd be interested in playing Age Of Empires 2, if just to see whether it was as good as remembered. As for Red Alert 2, I may or may not have the download of it that was given away free when the latest C&C was released, so that would be just the price of a couple of discs for everyone.

I'm interested. Don't know how many I will be able to play. My Uni blocks game traffic at peak hours. :x

I'd be interested in this alright. I reckon the Blizzard games would be a popular choice for this.

Even better, how abouts a n00bs eye view on Warcraft?

A bunch of us buy the game, form a guild and n00b it up. See what it's like from the ground up.

Doesn't work when I've been playing it for almost 2 years.
