Very very nice.

I had a special edition A4 Wacom Intuos3 which was brilliant but unfortunately I left it in public somewhere and it was stolen. But insurance paid out so much for it I was able to pay for rent or some gooseberry fool. The airbrush alone was worth £90 or something ridiculous so I actually got more in insurance and then some in today's money, because it was originally a bundle. Plus, they had no idea what the strawberry float it was so just gave me the money to buy an Intuos4. I've never got a replacement.

However I managed to do this using copic markers on cel (mylar/acetate), scanned in, image traced and refined in illustrator and done as a custom T that the customer loves. A long time since I've done a portrait, so I'm very pleased with this. Apparently it made them very emotional.

Image

This was based on a facebook photo that was basically a few hundred pixels of actual information so I'm not really sure how I managed to extract so much detail and it's actually a good resemblance. The guy has a charismatic jaw.

(note: respect please, the guy died really young)

Post a pic. My family is doing open art show this summer for first time ever which is silly since we're literally all artists. It costs 200 snoops to register it with the advertisers though :dread: strawberry floating art administrators, really.

I'm friends with the owners and they recently bought this place in Worthing. They have been running a catering company and supper club for years and decided to expand a bit. The name came from them. Rather then being a restaurant open every night its a private members fine dining club open for a couple of nights a week for a 7 course tasting menu. Although they are open for lunch and some brunches and afternoon tea. They wanted to create an air of mystery and exclusivity about the place. So you either get the name or you don't. It has got people talking. I'm mainly responsible for the mask idea. It was actually my first attempt and they went with it.

Its led to a few other interesting bits. It was always their idea to have the "OO" be peep holes so for me it made sense to have a face around that and the Venetian style mask made sense. They figured out how they wanted this on the windows. Got one window fully frosted and the others partly but they also have blinds. The eyes are cut out.

People have honestly been peaking through  and it looks awesome lit up at night when actually open- https://www.dropbox.com/s/ugelk5zm0nbrvtm/20170422_213236.mp4?dl=0

They got me to paint the mask on the wall inside and also come up with something extra special for the toilets

Also they have some of my drawings up but this is going to change for some paintings. Of which I've contributed to. They just didnt have anything to use for the opening events.

Yeah. They offered me a job behind the scenes. We have not sorted the money involved yet because stuff like painting the doors wasn't part of the plan.

Hold them to it. You did a good job.

I'd say they owe you at least 2-4 weeks of work above the NMW for the value added to the business, so £640-£1,200.

Work with friends, but don't work for friends*.

*free

For a good designer's fee, that translates to about 20-30hrs of work already done. If they are promising you a job "behind the scenes" they should pay you for the work you've already done in lieu AND the work behind the scenes. So whatever it is that's already done, and regardless of how long you spent doing it (which isn't important), you should ask for at least 10 full days work.

That's the deal for doing it pro bono in the first place. That's the price for "giving you an opportunity", but not having to pay up formally. Especially now that they are happy with it. If the opening week or month is a success, there's no excuse at all. Actually, if they fail, that's not an excuse either, because they've failed to cost their business.

Take what you get from them, and next time you produce artwork for someone, double it. If they say no, (a) walk away, (b) ask for 25% more than your last equivalent job. If they offer less, definitely walk away.

Congratulations, you are on the way to being a professional artist.

Thank you. I won't be putting that one up for sale as it's (hopefully) going to form some of what I do next. But I wanted to show it to see the reactions.

That's excellent, Matt - it's great that you're ready to show off lots of cool stuff there. Some of them I have seen before and it'd be nice if you racked up the sales; in particular, the Silence character looks awesome. I absolutely agree with Knoyleo about the "face" artwork... but, dang, it is all-out creepy, man! Good luck with the show and keep us updated.

Oh, and I spotted some of your 3DS and DS - and, possibly, Xbox 360? - collection tucked away in the background :) .

Yes. It's been really busy so I've not been able to stop to post. If you search for Worthing Artists Open Houses Venue 29 on Facebook we should have some pics.

I'll try and post some myself later but we have had 3 times as many as our opening day last year already.

Oh and 5 fridge magnets sold so far. :datass:

Now that sounds... intriguing!

I'm a bit disappointed that there has been no news on (a) what cake you have had, and (b) exactly what songs Johnny Zero has been regaling the visitors with ;) .

I had a couple of freshly made scwuns. We were treated to a few songs as the singing chef was back and forth supplying the town with cake. One song including a swing version of Radiohead's Creep.

We had 122 people today. Last year our first day was 23. In the end I sold 7 fridge magnets today. The highlight for me was very early on when a family turned up and a very excited 7 year old was running about telling everyone how amazing certain pictures were. He really loved my blue sunflower painting. He promptly sat down and drew it with some oil pastels. It might have looked more like a blue pacman in the end but he was so enthusiastic it didn't matter. I was still hanging some stuff up and he wanted to know what I was holding. It was my Seeds of Doom poster thing. His reaction? "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW" and then he ran off. A few pics-
