Cross America is something I'm definitely doing, though quite when I'm not sure.

The plan is probably to do it this summer after exams, but I'm really looking to do a placement in America so we'll see; with a bit of luck I'll do it directly before or after my placement.

After that, it's India and Nepal for 3 months.

As some may know I did Interrail round Scandinavia during the Summer.

Not particularly interested in Japan though.

Cool, I was looking at early may, but this may not be a problem.

Japan Airlines seems to be cheap, and June is just as cheap as May. We'd be looking at (around) £570 for the flights through Japan Airlines if we left on June 1st. From June the 2nd outwards flights go up in price by a metric fuckton, return flights are unaffected.

Will we have to find our own, as I said it would be easier for me to go westwards, whereas I'm guessing for you it would be East.

Where are you from? If it's Canada / America then yes, we'd have to fly separatly.

I've been looking into flights and hotels and gooseberry fool. I'll do an update tomorrow, but I'm proposing 1 - 14 of June. 2009. If gives us plenty of time to plan ahead and the weather should be nice.l

June? you'll miss the cherry blossom! Still, I went a few years ago in June and it was lovely, really nice weather so don't you dare miss Kyoto, you can get there from Tokyo (or vise versa) for between 4000 and 6000 yen by bus.

Some places to stay,

Tokyo Hostel in Minowa - http://www.tokyohostels.com/
I stayed here when I first came to Japan, good place to stay, friendly staff and good location, about a 5/10 min walk from Minowa station, two stops from Ueno (main station)

Oak Hotel in Ueno - http://www.oakhotel.co.jp/english/
Staying here now, it's great! I have a single room for £30 a night but well worth it in my opinion, internet in everyroom! The location is perfect, 5 mins from Ueno, 1 min from the stop after it on the Ginza Line, takes you right to Shinjuku in 20 mins. Lots of food places near by, seriously, this is the place to stay! I'm defintly coming back here next time I visit Tokyo.

Not used myself but a very cheap alternative to the expensive Shinkansen.

Mine is from Monday 23rd March to Friday 17th April. Are you at Uni yourself? If you are then your Uni might have different dates, although they should be similar.

You can stay for 1 week! Some people want to stay for 2. There's nothing stopping people from leaving early.
