Only problem with that is you end up with the most popular games on the list rather than the ones everyone should play.

If it were a popularity contest maybe but it isn't. Clearly isn't working as is as I am not sure why someone would recommend Fallout: New Vegas as a 'must play' after Fallout 3 has come up.

I could name lots but games age quickly so most of the games I've enjoyed the most wouldn't be worth playing now.

From recent games, though, I'd say Far Cry 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Resident Evil Zero - the best in the series and simply the best looking game of the generation, with emergent gameplay, a perfect weapon-set and a soundtrack to die for - survival horror at its very best

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance - Almost the perfect SW game

Star Wars: Rogue Leader (Rogue Squadron II) - even with its many flaws, still a fantastic play and, for a launch title, still shockingly beautifully realised. If only x-wing alliance looked this good...

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 - Not sure if 'watching' can count as 'playing', but at the higher levels this game is a beast. IMO, the best fighter ever made.

Donkey Kong Country - much better than Mario's 2D outings, with outstanding gameplay and even the 16-bit graphics still hold their own. Was tempted to put DKCR instead, but that would dishonour the originals - somebody else can do it.

Why pick the worst game in the series?

Maybe pick a series instead of a game then vote on the best release in that series? Then you don't have 10 Final Fantasy's and 5 GTA's in the list.
