#24 - Nintendo's Wild Odyssey

Nintendo are dooo-ing quite well for themselves?! Karl, Kris (aka Cuttooth), and Adam (aka Ad7) are back again to discuss how Nintendo's 2017 took them by surprise with two massive achievements in the form of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey on the little Android tablet that could. Is this Nintendo back to their best? Where can they go from here and what does 2018 hold for them? Can anyone actually name most of the Mario Odyssey Kingdoms?

After the resounding success of the E3 Conference Post Mortems there was a pretty unanimous feeling that people wanted the GRcade Podcast back.

Well, here it is!

I'm looking to do an episode every fortnight, with a rotating panel of participants. As with the E3 Conference discussions I'll be hosting and guiding the conversation where we talk about, naturally, Games + Stuff.

Unlike the previous GRcade Podcasts (GRcade.FM, Retrocade and the original GRcade Podcast) each episode will come in both audio and video formats. The audio version should be available on iTunes (As soon as I can get that sorted I'll let you know) and I'll make the mp3 available for general download as well. The video version will follow the same basic idea as the E3 conferences, with trailer and gameplay footage to match whatever we're discussing at the time, and will be available exclusively on our Youtube channel.

I reached out to a few members to take part in the first episode, but as we progress I want a broad selection of participants from across the forum. So if you're interested in taking part there's a very good chance you'll be able to.

The next episode will be recorded in two weeks so give us some feedback on the first episode (I already know what I don't like about it) and if you're interested in joining in let us know!

Nice, listening to this now. I like the concept of Games + Stuff to broaden the topics.

Was a shame the last one petered out the way it did, we got into a decent groove at points.

Sadly no.

I can't even begin to think how long it would take me to write up all that talking. :dread:

I do have a podcast feed, but I'm working on getting it onto iTunes so until then it's subject to change.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/Grcade - Put that into your podcast software of choice.

I think we probably went WAY too long on it this week.

2 hours is a bit much when listening to personalities I actually find funny and like a lot. If it's just us idiots I can't imagine wanting to hang around that long.

Absolutely.

Ideally I want to keep them to an hour and a half at most. So I'm already planning on reigning it in a bit more for the second one.

I enjoyed that, guys - good show :toot: . You covered a huge range of topics and I liked the mix. It was nice of you to mention Starquake's Hyper Sentinel Kickstarter towards the end of the chat. Oh, and just to build on that bit, it was Andrew Braybrook who wrote Uridium :) .

I would agree about the length - I had never listened to a podcast before ( :o etc) but I think that, for me personally, 45 mins would be about the limit; I'd prefer 30 mins but maybe I have a short attention span :shifty: .

Overall... bravo! Looking forward to hearing more in the future!

A little off-track, but the podcast reinforced a thought I had about the forum... Qikz, do you still use the "StayDead" tag? And, CK, your name is often quoted as "Herbie". Most "long-time" GRcadians still seem to refer to you guys by your 'old' names. What are your thoughts on this?

Fantastic stuff, everyone. Devlin, you've done a wonderful job, as always  I've only watched the first segment but I enjoyed it and the intro theme was great, especially the choice of music :P I'll be listening to the audio version of the rest on my way to work tomorrow :toot:

Enjoyable first episode but I agree that it needs to be shorter. Maybe have another break too, make it two 'Games' segments with one 'Stuff'?

Generally I think it'd be better if the recording/connection blips could be edited out if possible, but that will generally be dependent on the situation to determine how much of the flow of a conversation will be lost. Could also be quite time consuming.

Cheeky you should mute your Mumble notifications when recording too.

Looking forward to the next one. :)

I liked it. :)

Given how upset Qikz was about Brexit, I was impressed he remained calm while explaining his viewpoint. It was of course (as it had to be) one-sided and non-expert commentary, but that's what makes a community podcast interesting -- it's a snapshot of members' viewpoints.

I would say the time-plan should be half an hour for Games and half an hour for Stuff, giving an hour total. Bear in mind that Stuff is almost double the size of Games by thread count, so it would be really cool to give that half of the forum equal footing in the production.

I would agree with Cheeky Devlin's instinct to avoid the podcast becoming a platform for outright throat-tearing politics debates, but a bit of current affairs chat would be an interesting regular feature as long as it was kept relatively light-hearted.

EDIT: Ideally, I think I would divide each half an hour segment into either two fifteen-minute or three ten-minute topics, chosen beforehand based on what everyone wants to talk about. That way you keep it snappy and accessible, and maximise your chances of having at least one section a viewer will find interesting. You should outline at the start what each topic will be and in what order, so the listener knows what's coming up.

I think it's best to keep politics out of it to be honest. I get Brexit is about the biggest thing going on right now so fair enough to make an exception I guess but as everyone's just going to be varying degrees of centre / centre left anyway it just seems a bit pointless and a bit cringey to be honest.

There's plenty of Stuff to talk about without devlin into politics.

I'm in total agreement about the length. Going forward it'll be far shorter. I'm aiming for it to be between 1hr and 1.5hrs so hopefully the next episode will be a bit shorter in that regard.

I do usually have the mumble notifications off, but I forgot to switch it back after putting it back on. Neph decided to jump into the channel, said nothing, then left after twenty minutes or so. He did the same thing on one of the E3 videos as well.

Some good ideas there Karl. I am aiming to give less time to Games (That made up the vast bulk of the first one) and more to Stuff. It'll depend on what's been going on how the balance goes though.

And yeah I deliberately didn't want to turn the first episode into "Politics with GRcade". It can be a big turn off.

We had a structure, and we knew what we were going to talk about (We actually skipped a few news items) so it's just a case of being a bit more rigid with how long we spend on things.

But I'm glad everyone is enjoying it so far.

At this point episode 2 is going to be myself, Pedz and possibly Dragon which means I have space for one more participant.

The guidelines are the same as with the E3 videos. As long as you can get on mumble and can commit to recording at 9pm on 15th July you're more than welcome to join in. State your interest in the thread and I'll pick a name at random.

Oh and the podcast is currently undergoing iTunes approval so will hopefully be searchable on there very soon.

In the meantime you can subscribe to the podcast using http://feeds.feedburner.com/Grcade .

Sounds good.

I can't make the 15th (I'll be heading home to go to a wedding on the 16th -- usually Friday evenings are good for me, but you've managed to pick two in a row I can't do! ;) ). Would love to get involved in the future though.

Oh, one last minor point: IMO it would probably work slightly better to get everyone on first-name terms on the podcast. Not that using forum handles is a problem per se, but I just think it would have sounded more natural if everyone said e.g. 'James' instead of 'Qikz.'

Sorry for the long string of unsolicited comments but I hope at least some of it is applicable and helps! :)

But there's about 50 James' on here  I remember when I did PODSona and Vince put it on GAF they liked it, but said that real names would be better than forum names.

It's a shame it isn't going to be weekly as 2 weeks could get a lot of news and things may get glossed over or skipped.

Defs have forum handles and avatars in the background, I loved that feature. Just have 'aka James' underneath, and actually say James. There's just something about hearing made-up names spoken out loud that feels kind of awkward.
