PostGRcade Tasks of the Week: Week 3 - 9PM DEADLINE TONIGHT
by Mockmaster » Sun Sep 20, 2009 10:40 pm

Greetings again Task Adventurers!

Hello and welcome back for the next weekly instalment of Tasks of the Week.

If you are new to 'Tasks of the Week', this is the kind of thing you can either dip in and out of at your leisure, or contest seriously to take the ultimate title of TASK MASTER.

The low-down: Each week, I set a series of tasks. These tasks are not supposed to be chores. They are supposed to be positive, motivational experiences. Things that spice life up a little. Some are incredibly simple, others require more of a challenge. All, I hope, make a normal day a little less normal and make life a bit interesting.

I will be running this for 10 weeks, at the end of which I will award the winner (the person who scores the most points) an awesome prize, along with the sought after title of TASK MASTER. But the real prize is the satisfaction of achieving these tasks and the experiences you have in the process of doing so.

The 6 tasks comprise of:

- 2 Easy Tasks (1 point each)

- 2 Medium Tasks (3 points each)

- 2 Hard Tasks (5 points each)

2 bonus points for completing all 6 tasks.

Various extra bonus points for certain tasks.

Week 2 League Table:

For the stat crazy maniacs among you, Banjo and JK top the table. Zartan seems to have mysteriously disappeared this week and fallen down the table. Maybe he can pull it back in Week 3. New entrants such as MCN and White Rabbit stake their claim. The most completed task was Music for the Soul, followed closely by the Food task. It was quite enjoyable seeing what meals you all picked as you scrambled to complete each continent. I hope you enjoyed your culinary adventures. Along with this, we saw some impressive towers and heartfelt musical choices, along with a number of good deeds. But, now we move to week 3.

Week 3 Tasks

Easy (1 point each)

The Guru

In hectic day-to-day living, who has time to sit down and relax? To take the time to recharge those batteries and immerse yourself without thinking about what you have to do that day or how you will manage to do all the things you have to do? How do you feel about establishing an inner calm? At the very least, you will experience something new. At the very most, you could find a technique that helps you manage stress or anxiety. For a period of 3 days in a row, you have to practice meditation at least once a day. The technique you choose is up to you though it is probably best to stick to one method. A huge list of meditations with directions is available from http://www.meditationexpert.co.uk so pick one, close those eyes, and feel the relaxation refresh you from within.

New Look

What's your favourite, or one of your favourite, items of clothing? Think about it...... Your shirt perhaps? Your coat? Hat? Your high heels? How long has your favourite item of clothing held this #1 position for? A while, I wager. In fact, that item of clothing has become complacent with not having to defend its crown for so long. I think it's time for a new pretender to the throne. For this task, you need to....... go shopping. Easy, huh? Well, yes.... and no. There is an abundance of crap in shops and you cannot pass by buying just anything. To complete this task, you need to buy a new item of clothing that you can honestly say is a challenger to the title of 'One of your favourite items of clothing'. Visual Evidence required (does not need to be of you wearing it, but I need evidence you have purchased it at least, whether that's online or in a shop)

Medium (3 points each)

3 Degrees of Kevin Bacon (or another actor)

As you may know, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is a trivia game based on the assumption that any actor can be linked through his or her film roles to actor Kevin Bacon within six steps. For this task, I require you to play 3 Degrees of Kevin Bacon (or another actor of your choosing).

So, taking Kevin Bacon as an example: Watch a film with Kevin Bacon in it, then watch a film with someone in it who was in the first film with Kevin Bacon that you watched, then watch a third film with someone in it who was in the film with someone who was in that film with Kevin Bacon. Only one of these films can be a film you've seen before.

Bonus Points Available!: A massive 3 bonus points available here, 1 for each extra degree of Kevin Bacon (or other actor) film you watch, up to 6.

Creative Writing

Creative writing is a skill and something that can bring less used parts of your brain into activity. Furthermore, with the right topic, it can be very enjoyable. To pass this task, you need to produce a piece of creative writing. There is no word minimum or maximum. Poem, short story, review, whatever you like, no constraints. Whatever your creative mind feels an urge to express.

Hard (5 points each)

1. Funfilled Outing

This sceptred isle of the United Kingdoms is home to many landmarks and attractions, big and small. To pass this task, all you have to do, is visit one. I will accept any of the following: A nationally recognised landmark (e.g. Stonehenge, Angel of the North, Big Ben), a zoo (e.g. London Zoo, Whipsnade), an amusement park (Alton Towers, a local funfair), national parks (Lake District, Peak District), famous natural geographical phenomena (Loch Ness, Giant's Causeway, White Cliffs of Dover), museum (Natural History Museum, Madamme Tussauds, Kew Gardens) Those are all examples. You get the idea. You can ask me for clarification if you think of somewhere you want to go and I will judge whether it fits the bill of the task. Evidence required, preferably visua of the place itselfl, though an online ticket reservation receipt will be accepted.

Remember that many attractions in this country are totally free to visit.

Seven Deadly Scenes

Devised by the Catholic Church, the seven sins of 'Wrath', 'Gluttony', 'Greed', 'Envy', 'Sloth', 'Lust' and 'Pride' were used to guide people away from temptation and warn them of the sins that threatened eternal damnation. I think that, to some degree, these temptations are relevant to everyone, albeit certainly not in the same degree as Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman tried to convince us in their classic film. As relevant today as they have been historically, they still inform of our weaknesses as humans, tempted by things that may not benefit us in the long run and, indeed, could harm our self-concept and well-being. For this task, I want you to take photographs from your own life of what these sins mean to you. You can be as artistic/abstract as you like with this as the photographs are representative.

I hope you enjoy this week's selection. Cheers.

The deadline for all Task Completions is 9pm next Sunday - the 27th of September.

Another selection of good and interesting tasks. Looking forward to making a start on them. Oh and I was thinking about this game a after the first week and the idea of a "Visit a landmark/attraction" came to mind so I already have some ideas for that one.

I'm in the same boat (El Boat of Goat). I hope my student loan monies goes in this week. I really need some cash.

The only one that requires money though is the buying of clothes.

Wouldn't be so bad if I could watch movies I'd already seen for the Kevin Bacon one. Give us some leeway Mockman!

Zenigoat I need money to buy DVD's with Kevin Bacon in them, new clothing and either fill up my car or hop on a bus.

I'm not playing but I always jump in and see what the tasks are. I love that, with the evidence and time restraints on the tasks relaxed a little (to within the last three weeks) I've scored a whole 15 points without trying. I like to think my life is therefore great already.

I'm wrong, but I like to think that anyway.

The Kevin Bacon one may turn out to be a difficult one. I don't really understand it. Is it:

Watch a Kevin Bacon film -> Watch a film that stars someone that was in that Kevin Bacon film -> Watch a film that stars someone else that starred in that previous film -> etc.

Or does it mean watch 3 (or more) Kevin Bacon films??

Download films. And walk.

Two, there's vanity. And if you're using the clothes to pull there's lust. If you haven't taken off the labels you've got sloth as well.

Having to outlay money for up to three of the tasks is a bit annoying. I think I have cost effective solutions for everything though (think I may have hit a diamond of a film that is on my shelf but I haven't watched yet \o/). I need to get some bonus points this week, I'm strawberry floating gutted that I'm not joint top :x

I've finished the creative writing task, will post it during a lull in my productivity tomorrow...

Two questions:
1) Are we allowed to watch Kevin Bacon films where we have seen bits of it, but not enough that if someone asked "Have you seen x with Kevin Bacon?" you'd say "No", possibly expanding to "Erm, I've seen that bit where y, but I haven't seen the whole thing as I heard it wasn't very good..."?
2) Do we have to watch the films in order, or can we watch the second and third films before the original Kevin Bacon one arrives?

I had a bit of a think while I was sleeping last night. I realise that in these times of financial woe and recession, many of you are hard up for monies, especially students who rely on their student loans for beer and drug supplies. I remember what it was like. And it is not my intention to make any of these tasks annoying chores. They should all be enjoyable or interesting experiences. I will endeavour, in future, to try and make tasks less reliant on monies.

You are all intelligent individuals though, so if you think about it, I am sure you'll find cost effective solutions for the tasks that may require an outlay.

Nevertheless, remember, the attraction/landmark you visit doesn't have to cost money. There are plenty of free places, and I am going to be very lenient on what counts as an attraction, though not ridiculously so. Take, for example, young bigcheez2k3.

bigcheez2k3 wrote:I went to Greenwich Park today, does that count?

As the oldest enclosed Royal Park in the country, Greenwich Park would count as a task pass and 5 points in the bag for bigcheez. And it's entirely free to visit. Sadly for young bigcheez, he went there before the start of the Week 3 tasks. So unfortunately I cannot count it.

Furthermore, I realise that not everyone has the ability to download films, or maybe they are morally against it. I will therefore make the Kevin Bacon task a little easier. You can do 3 degrees of ANY actor. But it must be done properly. And no, you do not have to watch them in a specific order, (I'd prefer it if you did) but they must all link back to one film and one actor. I will also allow 1 of the films to be a film you've seen before.

I will edit the film task in the first post to reflect these updated clarifications.

God speed and good luck.

You realise you missed the 9pm deadline, don't you? I will be lenient this time as you are a great Tasker, but try and be more prompt next week. I will update the table later today. :)

That's essentially it. You are not supposed to watch 3 Kevin Bacon films.

Oh bugger I did not realise that. Curses this is going to be troublesome.

Anyhow I do live in a world Heratige City (Bath), so surely me just walking about town counts as the big day out, I can even take some photos of the lovely sites.

Edit* Will a trip to watch the mighty Bristol Rovers count?

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&sourc ... 8&t=h&z=17

Thinking of taking the dog there today, not sure if it's a heritage site or anything, it's a woods with a river and few lakes that the dog can go in.
