PostGRcade Tasks of the Week: Week 6
by Mockmaster » Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:48 pm

Hello and welcome to Week 6 of GRcade Tasks of the Week.

If you are new to 'Tasks of the Week', this is the kind of thing you can either dip in and out of at your leisure, or contest seriously to take the ultimate title of TASK MASTER.

The low-down: Each week, I set a series of tasks. These tasks are not supposed to be chores. They are supposed to be positive, motivational experiences. Things that spice life up a little. Some are incredibly simple, others require more of a challenge. All, I hope, make a normal day a little less normal and make life a bit interesting.

I will be running this for 8 weeks, at the end of which I will award the winner (the person who scores the most points) an awesome prize, along with the sought after title of TASK MASTER. But the real prize is the satisfaction of achieving these tasks and the experiences you have in the process of doing so.

The 6 tasks comprise of:

- 2 Easy Tasks (1 point each)

- 2 Medium Tasks (3 points each)

- 2 Hard Tasks (5 points each)

2 bonus points for completing all 6 tasks.

Various extra bonus points for certain tasks.

The Week 5 Table

Terrible Lizard makes his mark with 100% in his first week. Meanwhile, Ironhide breaks into the green and Falsey breaks into the blue.

WEEK 6 TASKS:

Easy (1 point each)

Smiler

Image

I'm not going to give a big intro to this as the task is actually very simple. For this task, all you have to do is smile at 5 people. You can accompany a smile with a word or two or just offer a polite smile to someone you walk past. No head-down shuffling will be permissible for this task. Look people in the eye and offer a friendly smile. It might be worth making a note of how people respond. Do they smile back? Or start a conversation? Simple.

World in his Grasp

Image

Have you ever used Google Earth? http://earth.google.co.uk/ It’s a fascinating piece of software that can be a useful resource. You are able to use satellite images to zoom down onto places streets across the world. For this task I simply want you to download and install the software (it’s perfectly safe), and use it to locate and examine 5 famous landmarks in 5 separate countries or regions. Seeing them from this vantage point almost makes one feel like a God. Suggestions: The Great Wall of China. The Pyramids at Giza. The Grand Canyon. You get the drift.

Medium (3 points each)

Charitable

Image

For this task I wish for you to do something charitable. I will accept one of the following:

1) Donate to charity (money or one of your possessions to a charity shop
2) Sponsor something/one (e.g. a Tiger)
3) Do something that raises money for a registered charity

The Artful Dodger

Image

Pretty much the antithesis of the Charitable task. I bet you're a pretty straight edge guy/gal. You're on the level. Trustworthy. But for this task, you need to explore the darker side. To pass, you have to successfully scam someone. How you do this is entirely up to you. Who you scam is up to you. It can be a big scam, or a tiny scam. Any type. But at the end of the scam you must have gained something and that the other person must have lost.

Hard (5 points each)

Flip-Out

You remember those flip books with art in them? You may have done them at school. Flip book Art is a lost skill. Time for you to rediscover it.

It is basically the process of drawing individual pictures on the pages of a small notebook, then when you flip through them it creates an animation. A rather competent example:

I am not asking you to do anything like as complicated as that. Your animation could be stickmen. Anything. It has to be at least 15-20 pages long though.

No visual evidence required.

Bonus Points: 3 bonus points available if you video the flipping of your flip book.

Rorschach

Image

Do your own 'Rorschach' Test.

"The Rorschach test (German pronunciation: [ˈʁoɐʃax]; also known as the Rorschach inkblot test or simply the Inkblot test) is a psychological test in which subjects' perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analyzed using psychological interpretation, complex scientifically derived algorithms, or both."

I'd like you to get some ink (or some other liquidy substance - I am being flexible in what is allowed) and then blot it onto a piece of paper or card. Then, simply say what you see from the shape you have created. Will it be guts? Guns? Guts and guns? Or perhaps flowers.

Bonus points: 1 bonus point for actually using ink and card.

All Tasks must be finished by 9pm on Monday the 19th of October.

You should probably have specified that people should use ink for the last one, otherwise we're going to get spunky paper.

I'm loving the Medium Tasks.

I wonder if I could sign up to a charity and then ask the person for 50p?

Hmm the scamming one will take some thinking, unless I just ask my mom if she wants me to get her something from the grocery store and then I keep the change or something. :shifty:

Done the first two, I tend to smile at people if they look at me when I'm walking past as a kind of nervous thing anyway so I did it more than five times just at Kevin Smith earlier. My looked up landmarks were The Great Wall of China, Ayer's Rock in Australia, The Eiffel Tower in France, Christ the Redeemer in Rio di Janeiro, Brazil, and just because we share a name, Big Ben in London.

If I don't does that count as a scam?

No, due to paradox. By not completing the tasks, you would therefore have completed a task, thus creating a headfuck.

The Flip-out task was blatantly inspired by my friend, Post-it Pete. 8-)

I am not playing but if anybody wants to send me their bank details I would class that as a charitable act on your part.

I had a dream last night that the entire forum entered this week's Tasks of the Week. Even Earl Grey and Steve.

For some reason the task I had set was to dress up a cuddly toy version of Thundercat's Liono with whatever accessories you could find. The task was a huge success, with literally dozens of pages of entries.

Then I woke up. :(

Thought I'd mention that I did the scammer task today, I didn't have enough cash for a bus ticket to Uni on me, so I just slid all the change I had into the little bit where you put your money, and the guy assumed I'd given right change and gave me a ticket. I won. 8-)

Easy tasks will be completed within the next hour or so (I need to download Google earth first).

The charitable task will be completed sometime in the next couple of days and the Rorschach task sometime today - I'll be using paint.net to randomly draw a black 'splodge' (with my eyes shut) then use the mirror tool to 'fold' the image.

I'm not attempting the scam or flipbook tasks.

Surely it would be easy for a wheelchair person to scam someone?

You're probably right, I'm just too honest to scam anyone though.

I'm working now so I don't have time to take part. Sorry dude.

Also, I don't like Thundercats. You might be able to forgive my first reason, but surely not the second.
