Well obviously we'll do the Harbour area, and walk from Bondi to Coogee Beach. Might do the zoo as well.

But definitely looking at a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Would people recommend hiring a car? Or using that Hop-on, Hop-off bus service?

To the Blue Mountains, train. Like I say, it's $11 return. General: public transport is fine.

We already had a hired campervan when I was there so we drove, but like Taf says the public transport in Australia is decent and $11 return sounds a lot cheaper than a hire car!

Advice please

Well first of all, where are you going and what will you be doing?

I am going to Medellin in Colombia for about 3 weeks.

The vast majority of time I will be staying in the city ( a local hostel ) and during the week I will be doing some volunteering work.

Spending unto a week in London in May and just seen a eurostar sale to Paris. £29 each way!
Ive never been to Paris before and I'll be travelling alone. How many days would you guys recommend? I was thinking Sunday - Tuesday or Monday to Weds since Sundays maybe a quiet day in Paris. So 2 nights? or stretch it to 3?

Update
Just booked the eurostar tickets before the sale ends for £58 return. I'll be going for 2 nights. Also got virgin tickets into London for £20 return in the sale too. I'll be spending the whole week in London so having a gap in Paris will be nice. Probably also going to Brighton for a day whilst I'm in London as I've never been and love seaside towns.

So I revived this message last night, in relation to my trip to Colombia:

Hi, *my name*, i hope this message finds you well!

With your volunteering getting very close, I was wondering if I could ask you a favour: I have a volunteer, *name*, who worked with *Volunteering company* last year and she would like to send a donation to sponsor a child at her project. As it is very complicated to send funds from UK to Colombian charity via international banks, the only option is to bring here a cash. It's not going to be a huge amount, probably between £100 and £200, and it can be transfered into your bank account if you agree to help us out.

And also if possible, I would like to ask you to bring to Medellin few letters I might have in London? I used to live there before I moved to Colombia in 2010 and do get some post - mainly from my bank - from time to time. I would really appreciate it.

Please let me know if it is possible and meanwhile I will finalise all arrangements for your stay in Medellin and will send them through shortly. Also if you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you!

The cynic in me is screaming that this is suspicious, but at the same time I don't really want to sour the relationship I will have with the volunteering team over potentially nothing.

what do you guys n gals think?

Kezzer, I have a friend in Colombia who is suffering in the heat and getting really dry skin. If I give you loads of bags of talcum powder, would you be able to take some with you on your journey? It would really help him out.

Tell you what, I know customs is quite strict at the moment, so I'll stick all this talcum powder in clear plastic bags too. Nothing to hide.

Jesus man, what's the volunteering company?

Sounds like a total scam. Get the letters though, I'm curious as to what would be inside. Can always reseal them if they're legit.

What sort of fool would smuggle "talcum powder" into Columbia?

Any in particular? My gf is going back to Rome in the summer and I don't want to really. Sick of all my flying funds going on London and Rome. So might go away on my own.

Barcelona, Budapest and Amsterdam are probably my favourites (alongside Rome, but you're sick of that...). It depends what you're looking for really but all those have a decent mix of sightseeing, local culture and great food/drink options.

Sevilla is somewhere I'd also really recommend for somewhere a little less obvious. Beautiful place and great food if you like tapas.

must go to the cathedral if you go to Sevilla; incredible

Has anyone here been to New York?

Thinking of a last minute trip next weekend. Currently looking at staying in a hotel in Times Square. Is that a good area to stay in? What exactly is there to see and do in the city in just a few days? Was thinking of flying over on the Friday and arriving Friday evening, having all day Saturday and Sunday, then most of Monday before departing at about 11pm Monday night.

Nothing concrete yet, but was wondering if anyone had experience/advice on a short break there.

Times Square is busy, noisy, bright. I can't imagine sleeping there is worth the outrageous cost of hotels there.

How about Battery Park in New York? Or is that a bit too out of the way for things?

New York is well connected and Manhattan is surprising small. (I lived arse end of London so I'm used to 45 minutes on the tube) A weekend break will easily cover Manhattan, but for day trips out to Brooklyn and Staten Island and such you'll maybe need a bit longer.

Personally I didn't really care for Manhattan. You're in awe for the first hour because it's all so familiar from films and tv. But quickly becomes so-so once you've been past everything because you've seen it all before so often. Lower Manhattan is nice, good for food and if you hop over to Brooklyn there's some cracking suburbs which shows the real character. Basically, if you go to London and wanna see Buckingham palace, book Times Square. If you visit London and do Primrose Hill, Battery park might be better.

It's looking like Battery Park is where it's going to be. Planning on visiting Times Square and 5th Avenue, which I think is one of the bigger shopping areas isn't it? Is that where you've got places like Macys and Bloomingdales?
Was thinking of a trip to the Statue of Liberty (With a ferry port right in Battery Park itself for quick and easy access), though wasn't thinking of Staten Island or Brooklyn. Not sure what's even in those places.

I've stayed just off Times Square before and noise wasn't a problem at all. Guess it all depends on the hotel, whereabouts your room is, etc. Location-wise it was great. Anywhere between Madison Ave and 7th is great for shopping, and staying anywhere central like that you're close to the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, etc. In a few days you can easily see the main sights, Manhattan is a piece of piss to get around.

Just seen the weather warnings that there's a big storm due to hit New York on Sunday with some heavy snowfall on Monday.

Might be worth a rethink on the timing I think :dread:
