Yeah, I stayed in the Hotel Edison just off Times Square (it's quite a famous Art Deco-style building) and never had any problems with noise or stuff.
Though as has been said, Manhattan is fairly small and well connected with the subway so you could realistically stay anywhere.
It's hard to judge what I thought of New York. I went when I was a young teenager and at that point it was by far the biggest city I had even been to (hadn't even been to London at that point and think the biggest I had visited was... Manchester).
So it's hard to tell if I found it amazing simply because of that or whether it really was that good. It was also a school trip and was one of the first times without my parents and with pretty much complete freedom from the teachers. And the day Boro won their first, and only, trophy. That probably won't happen when you go, unfortunately.

I don't think snow causes much of a problem there because they're very used to it. We were actually hoping for snow when we went. The ferry to Statue of Liberty and island is expensive whereas the Staten Island ferry is free and goes right around it.

Battery Park is nice, although lower Manhattan is pretty boring as it's really a business district. Like everyone has said though, getting around Manhattan is quick and easy. A lot of the main tourist sites are clustered around midtown, with the main museums being on both sides of the park. The Met on the upper east side is a must.
In Manhattan, the most fun neighborhoods for eating and drinking are probably the east village, lower east side, SoHo and meatpacking district. Greenwich village is leafy and pleasant. Best views of the lower Manhattan skyline (financial district) are from Brooklyn Heights or the Staten Island ferry. Best view of midtown skyline (Empire State, Chrysler, UN etc) is from Gantry Plaza park in Queens.

Anyone been to Cape Town? I am considering booking a 10 day trip in October. Never been to Africa mind you so will be a brand new experience.

Going back to Japan for 5 days in April, hoping to get to see the cherry blossoms this time. I'll be in Tokyo for a day and then Osaka for the other 4 days, but will be able to move around. Any suggestions for things to see?

What have you done before over here?
You could go stay in a temple in Koyasan - can get a train there from Osaka easy enough.
That's presuming you've already visited those two cities before and seen the main stuff there.

In Tokyo, I've been to Akihabara, and Asakusa, in Osaka I've been to Osaka castle, and then gone on day trips to Nara, and Kyoto. I'm sure there's loads more stuff for me to see in the actual city of Osaka. Not really keen on staying in a temple as I'll be staying with in-laws while I'm over there so doesn't really make sense to sleep anywhere else.

I'm off to New York three weeks today!
Applied for our ESTAs yesterday, and there was a section on the form asking for your social media profiles. It was optional, but still.

Me and my gf are planning to go away soonish. We have a few ideas which are Lisbon, Copenhagen (or another Scandinavia country) or Poland.
Anyone been to any of these?
I like the idea of Copenhagen but am not sure how much it will cost. Seeing as a beer costs the best part of a tenner, I'm a little concerned as to food prices and attractions.
Not sure where in Poland we'd go.
As for Lisbon I just think it looks nice, but sadly flights are quite expensive from Hamburg.

Never heard anything bad about Copenhagen, and Warsaw is a great place to explore and take in. We were there just after most of their government was killed in a plane crash so it was a bit sombre, but I gather it's not usually like that. Heard great things about Krakow too.

Kraków is a beautiful place, with a lovely medieval market square in the centre. I've been twice (although once for a stag do so that doesn't count as much...). You also have Auschwitz nearby which obviously isn't a fun experience but somewhere that is well worth visiting. There's also a salt mine that is apparently very good but I haven't been.
I visited Copenhagen to see mates living there, and while we had a great weekend because we were seeing old mates, I'm not sure how good it is for a weekend city break. There's not a whole lot of sightseeing-the mermaid for one, is abit naff-to the point a lot of the locals I've met seem embarrassed it's famous. It does have Freetown Christiania in one area-a hippy colony of about 1000 people, that is a 'free state' with no laws. I'm not sure how far that goes-i think the authorities are in constant discussion with them but I believe the police largely avoid it and tolerate it as much as possible.
I personally think Stockholm is a more interesting place for a city break, although booze is expensive there too. I have only been there and Copenhagen in Scandanvia though.

On another note, spent the morning bombing round on an ATV at the base of the 'world's most symmetrical volcano'-Mayon Volcano in the Philippines.
I don't know how it isn't more famous-or at least I hadn't heard of it before coming here, because it's amazing. Here's a photo I took of my girlfriend looking up at it:

Krakow's lovely, the salt mines are ace too.
Was just in Lisbon the other week, is nice but small. Can do it all in two days, we went out to the west coast for hiking which was really nice. Both of those are cheap as well, Krakow in particular if yo like beer.

I went to Gdansk in November, lovely little city. Cheap, pretty and has lots to visit in the area, like Malbork Castle.
It has a WWII bunker that has been converted into a nightclub too.

I'm currently living in Cyprus for a few months....anyone lived or spent a long time here?
Know any hidden gems? Any particular activities I should do?
I am currently thinking I may learn to dive out here....but there are other choices like Kite Surfing, wind surfing or generic surfing, I have not done a watersport before so if anyone also has reccomendations on if they've done any of these (out in cyprus or not) then do let me know! It's going to get fooking hot so doing something around water as a hobby may be essential.
