These stats have been great to read through, thanks for doing this Karl!

I'm happy to see that we SONMers had a visible positive impact on the numbers too :toot:

Reading that list of members with 10+ posts who haven't posted since X date is so weird...some real nostalgia seeing some of those names :(

We've done this before but I think we should scrap 'Currently Playing' and 'Last Game Completed' threads.

Interesting thanks Karl.

I would say we are definitely dying, and I'm glad you are not a doctor. You can see it by simply looking at the trend - and there will be some threshold that will result in a big drop as not enough people will be around to create discussion. Plus people like Ad7, Moggy, Denster etc are almost at an age of forgetting how to use a computer.

But everything is dying, we aren't dead yet. Neogaf is down, Reddit is next.

NeoGAF died because their owner is an egomaniacal sex pest who had a bunch of nonces as mods.

Funnily enough with a little luck I will be a medical doctor (though not a clinician; PhD medicine rather than MD) in about 6-12 months :toot:

As you say, everything is dying. What I meant by that statement is that I don't think we are more acutely terminally ill than any other traditional forum-y website. The trend is downwards, but at a decelerating rate (and we actually grew slightly this year), so I think we will be stable at more-or-less the current activity levels for at least another few years. After that, who can say? A few years is a long time on the Internet.

1cmanny1 wrote:there will be some threshold that will result in a big drop as not enough people will be around to create discussion.

This isn't quite my experience on other forums, actually, but sure, I freely admit it's a possibility. I don't have any data on where that threshold could be though so I can't report on it, other than to concede it could be there. I think it's fatalist to worry about that when the relative stability in the data over the last couple of years is in itself good news, though! ;)

Can't argue with that.

You created our original "GRcade is dying" thread, btw, so it's kind of nice to see you here in this one a whole 7 years later! :P

Thanks for your feedback, anyway. Genuinely glad you found it interesting.

I think that could be a good idea. There's not much discussion in those threads because people post about a wide variety of games. If instead the dedicated game threads were updated (or new threads created) then it could provoke more discussion.

I've been saying for years that mega threads are awful. Which I suppose goes to show how much I respect what the wider community thinks.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Yeah it's certainly felt quieter this past year.

I'm finding that some big game announcements from E3 didn't even have threads when I came to post recent news updates.

In fact if it weren't for me, MonkeyMan and Saint of Killers there'd barely be any threads at all.

Fully agree, there's nothing to pull me into those threads.

Half the forum seems to be playing games that are over a year old at any given time, and I have no issue with people bumping threads for currently available games.

On reflection, how has killing the "Retro" forum worked out? I was much more keen to post about older games and consoles than I am with the current setup.

Ahh graphs. I love a good graph.

I can't believe how long I've been here, I joined in 2003. 15 years wow.

Thanks Karl.

Thanks Karl, those stats are interesting. And while decline may not be terminal it does reiterate the need for us to encourage new members (I agree with encouraging the creation of new topics for titles, rather than losing them in mega-threads – the Switch chat thread is a good example).
