Dan.s Favourite Game:

Animal Crossing (Nintendo Gamecube, 2003*)

I posted recently in the AC thread about my memories of this game. To keep it short, I loved it simply because it provided an incredibly in-depth world that was presented so simply and with such impeccable charm.

Image Image Image

The characters are exactly that - characters - and the experience is like no other you'll have with any other game. Or with anyone else with the same name, for that matter, such is the nature of the game - your town, neighbours, the flora and fauna etc. are all randomly generated when you boot the disc up for the first time. One of the Gamecube's masterpieces.

*When I played it

For the longest time I would have said either Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII but it has to be Dark Souls for me.

Nothing quite beats the fear of the unknown you get from a Souls game and in turn nothing quite beats the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction you get from conquering that fear, venturing forth and killing that boss that has just raped you 10 times off the trot.

I don't think anything will top my favourite moment in Dark Souls where if you fight Sif after you have rescued him in the DLC area he recognises you and appears reluctant to fight but ultimately accepts his duty to protect his masters grave. I wasn't expecting that at all and the first time I saw it I got goosebumps.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Does this actually need explanation?

Ok, fine. It took a 2D world and gave it a 3rd dimension, showing just what a 3D world in a videogame could be, it could be alive, it could change over time, it could have character and charm. It solved the problem of targeting using Z-lock, a system thats still used today with great effect. It had Epona, you could jump over a mummy strawberry floating gorge on a mummy strawberry floating horse. You could see the effect on the world when evil took hold, you could then see the effect you had when you were putting things right. Time travel! Dungeons that you loved, dungeons you strawberry floating hate, but they all make you feel like a badass when you beat them. Bosses, wonderful memorable bosses. Side quests that send you all over the world but never feel like hard work or tacked on, they felt integral to the game and the experience. Swords, arrows, boomerangs, bombs, fairies, tunics, boots, spells, so many options, so many ways to murder things, all of them feel just right. The hookshot.

All of these things but most of all it lived up to the hype, for years I pored over every scrap of info possible in anticipation of this game. If a magazine had Ocarina news, I bought it and read it over and over, its the most hyped Ive ever been for a video game. Then it came out and it still managed to blow me away, I knew what was coming in many cases, I knew you got to ride Epona, but when I got to do it, it was so much better than I expected. Id seen it in ads and on demo reels but nothing in games has felt as seminal as the moment I first pulled the Master Sword from its plinth and charged headlong into the future.

Ooooh.... Dan, man, this is gonna be difficult. A great choice in Animal Crossing but, for me, there are two other titles. And I can't decide between them. Will have a think and then return.

Resident Evil (the original)

Id hear the rumours, my mates who had a playstation spoke about this game set in a mansion filled with monsters...the reviews were gushing full of praise for it, calling it terrifying, the hype (i was a saturn lad) waiting for it was unbearable.

Its when games grew up for me. For so long it was bright breezy, happy lands, bouncing around collecting coins, the release of RE was during my teenage years and the first time I played it. It was a simple OMG moment, the dogs, the graphics, the zombies, it was horrifying and addictive in so many ways. There were times when I was on my own, staring at my 14" portable tv, scared to go through the next door, not knowing what was behind it was the worst, standing there motionless waiting for an attack, only for it not to come, the story, while its gooseberry fool now, was revolutionary for me, nothing id ever played had told a story, no games really had a story.

I re-bought the game 5/6 times. Its the fact I can remember everything about it that makes it my number 1 game, something like OoT was amazing but I really cant remember much of it, RE I can recite the mansion room for room, speed runs, everything.

Its my favourite game ever.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Fallout 3 (Xbox 360). My favourite single-player videogame. I loved the whole experience; the setting, the environment, the exploration... the complete adventure. I'm including the DLC in this, too, because I enjoyed them just as much and they each shone a different light on the gameworld. Just thinking about the game makes me feel good. I can only choose one game

Pro Evolution Soccer (PS3 / PS4). My favourite multi-player videogame. The game has made me feel both crushing disappointment and high exultancy; to play it is to live it. At times, such as grabbing a last-gasp winner against an online opponent, it has been glorious.

Just missed out: Mercenary (C64). Championship Manager 93 (Amiga). Wii Sports Resort (Wii). Animal Crossing (DS / 3DS). VVVVVV (3DS). Mad Max (PS4).

Super Mario World

Image

I don't think there are many games I would deem as close to perfect but Super Mario World ( and Tetris ) is the closest a game can be for me.

It was everything I loved about Mario games but stretched into a huge adventure. The game would let you re-enter levels you have beaten, so you can try and get the secret exit, or go in get a feather, a Yoshi or the power up you need to tackle the level you are on. Nintendo turned up their level designs to 11, just incredibly tight platfomring.

The music is incredible, even changing when you have Yoshi. The little details like having transparent water, when Mario is on a fence and being able to navigate to the other side of the fence blew my mind.

Star Road was a revelation, super hard levels that really pushed your Mario abilities to the limit. Getting all the exits for the game is still my favourite thing in gaming.

It is still so playable and as I have aged I have gotten much much worse at the game.

I find it really difficult to compare games from different genres. Is Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword better than The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Is Deus Ex better than Super Mario World? Is Pokemon HeartGold better than Counter-Strike Source?

I'll vote for Deus Ex. The graphics may have aged poorly (though mods can help), but the writing and gameplay are still - 15 years later - totally unmatched. It combines the pace, excitement, and tension of a stealth FPS with a genuinely interesting and (we now know) prescient narrative befitting of the best RPGs -- a story which actually has coherent things to say about politics and philosophy.

My mind changes on this constantly - at the moment I'm stuck between Link's Awakening and Jak II while feeling bad for dismissing MGS3 and Timesplitters 2. I'll have to come back once I've made a decision!

Updated the OP. Also it seems the images I posted have re-sized. Don't know if this is a mod or automatic but if it's the former - thanks!

Tetris (Gameboy)- Such a simple game in both graphics and concept but behind the simplistic appearance is a satisfying, addictive experience that has that "Just one more go" factor that sees a quick 5 minute blast turn into several hours hunched over a tiny monochrome screen listening to a repeated loop of a traditional Russian folk song.

Super Metroid - SNES

There's not really much I can say about Super Metroid that I haven't said before. For me it's easily the best game on the SNES, beating out even Mario World and Link to The Past.
Visually the dark Sci-Fi aesthetic mixed with the subtle, minimalist soundtrack to result in an atmosphere that few games since have managed to match.
It's drip-feed of items and abilities is perfectly timed so that you almost always feel like you're making progress. Samus journey from vulnerable loner to one-woman Tank is a joy to partake in.
The game world is expansive and absolutely packed with secrets (I've still never 100% finished it) which just beg to be found. Taking the player through six distinct parts of the world, each of which looks and feels different from the last, there's a genuine sense of travelling deeper and deeper into the planet Zebes.
Then to top it off it has one of the best end sequences ever created for a video-game which is simultaneously bombastic and emotional, all without a single word of dialogue or a single cutscene.
My favourite game used to be Ocarina of Time, but I've rediscovered my love for Super Metroid in the past couple of years. It takes every advantage of the hardware to craft a game that is as enjoyable as it is perfect, and which for me is the crowning achievement of Nintendo's games catalog.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is my favourite game ever, hands down the best Zelda, and is better than Super Metroid. Such an amazing adventure from start to finish.

Jak II: Renegade

Jak II is a fun, if simple, extreme sports boarding game in the style of Tony Hawks or SSX but with a futuristic setting. The score attack mode adds a real challenge and mastering all 12 tricks takes time and eff- wait, no, sorry, let me start again. Jak II is a really fun and challenging futuristic racing game with tight controls and a reliance on lightning-fast reflexes. The stadium events offer a real challen- hold it, sorry, that's not what I mean either. Jak II is a very fun mini-game collection that, while never too complicated, offers difficult to master mini-games that require extended concentra- woops, that isn't right. Jak II is a very competent GTA-clone that offers a large and interesting open-world city to explo- wait, what even is this game?

Jak II is a 3D platformer. It's an action game. It's a shooter. It's an on-rails shooter. It's a racing game. It's a jet-boarding game. It's a mini-game collection. It's an open-world mission-based game. It's a story-driven dystopian time-travelling adventure. It's everything a videogame should be. It's perfect and I love it. Deeply. With passion.

My favourite game probably changes depending on my mood (it was a tough call between this and TimeSplitters 2 at the moment), but one game that will always be in and around the top spots is Metal Gear Solid. This blew my mind when I first played it when I was 10 years old, it was pretty much everything I had ever wanted in a game. I recently re-played through it and I think it has held up really well, although that could just be nostalgia talking. I was enthralled enough to complete it in one sitting anyway.

The story (while still ridiculous) is a bit more grounded than later entries, and it was probably the most film-like game I had played at the time. The boss fights are great fun for the most part, and there's a surprising amount of little touches and easter eggs that you won't notice on the first playthrough.
