GRCADE'S GREATEST RETRO VIDEO GAME MOMENTS

I love retro video gaming moreso than current gen and I know alot of you do also and it's a shame that this board isn't very active so I thought I'd start another debate/poll/voteable thingymahjig but rather than using just your top games we'll be using your top gaming moments to give this board abit of a boost

Here's how it will work:

1.) You pick 3 games
2.) You pick 3 specific moment
3.) You give your reason as to why you picked those 3 moments

I will start with my top 3 gaming moments below so you get an idea of what I mean, I will leave this post open until 12am on 30/01/10 after that I will take all the moments picked and divide them up into group polls on which people can vote and the winners from each will go to one last poll to decide the top retro gaming moment of all time (if theres 10 or more I will make it a top xx list)

Rules

- You can only pick 3 max
- You need to pick a specific moment/part from each game
- You need to give a reason as to why you love it
- You cannot pick a current gen game

Also where possible you can post a video or pics of said moment to show everyone else 8-)

Sound good? anybody interested? I don't recall this being done before but correct me if i'm wrong and we'll just kill it off  if not an we go ahead would someone be so kind as to make a fancy banner for it

Heres mine to kick things off

GAME Super Mario World (SNES)
MOMENT Meeting Yoshi for the First time
REASON I had been a big Mario fan from the moment I got my NES way back when, I played each installment to death so when I first heard all about the upcoming SNES and the next gen Mario I was mega excited, Fast forward to Xmas when I opened up my SNES and shoved SMW in for the first time my eyes lit up as I played my first level I worked my way along as any other Mario game until I came across 2 ? boxes and what appeared from the Second? YOSHI! :D up until then I had never seen anything like it being able to ride a secondary character was an amazing experience and somehow made playing each level even better and showed me why the SNES really was next gen

GAME Super Mario Kart (SNES)
MOMENT Rainbow road
REASON Me and my cousin had been playing SMK for most of xmas day we finally got to the last track on the last cup when rainbow road appeared the multicoloured track, the great theme and one of the toughest tracks ever, made for epic moments as we both tried to ace the track, multiplayer at it's finest

I'm still trying to decide on my 3rd moment should be I will post it later

GAME Mario Kart 64 (N64)
MOMENT Hopping over the wall in Wario Stadium
REASON At first it was just for the "OMG AWESOMES" in doing it. Then it was the "OMG WTF HAX" reactions of other people watching it happen. I made the level so much fun to play. We enforced a rule where you couldn't jump over and back (quick lap) more than once in a race though which made it fairer. Nothing to stop using over wall jumps though.

Can't think of another 2 atm

GAME Gunstar Heroes (Mega Drive, 1993)
MOMENT Seven Force boss battle
REASON This is the greatest boss battle of all time, to me. It's genius, creative, and, at the time, one of the best showcases of the Mega Drive's power, which wasn't as far away from the SNES as people would have you believe. On easier difficulties, Seven Force would only transform into 4 or 5 of his 7 forms, but on the hardest mode, you'd be assaulted by all 7. They all had their own energy bar, and all had different attack patterns. Due to the speed you were going at, you weren't given too long to figure out these patterns, making the fight frenetic and epic. Amazing.

NES Pirate copy of Super Mario World - looks very much like a ROM hack of SMB 3. It doesn't exactly go to disprove your next-gen statement, but at the very least, is a curious and funny little hack.

GAME Gargoyle's Quest
MOMENT The ending
REASON It was the first time I actually finished a game. I felt so good about myself! There was the final cutscene with a little joke in it (Firebrand, whom you have supported throughout the game will conquer Earth....) and then the parade of all the bosses. Ever since, finishing a game, seeing that final cutscene - and the credits, has always been special to me...

GAME Super Mario 64
MOMENT Starting up the game for the first time
REASON No gaming experience can ever compare to it! The first cutscene, then - for the very first time - controlling a character in a 3D space with an analogue stick. Mario walked exactly in the direction I pushed the stick. It felt so right, so intuitive from the start. And if you pushed the stick a bit he would walk slowly, if you pushed it all the way, he'd run! And it sounded different whether he walked through the grass or on one of the pathways... It sounds like nothing special now, but at that time it was so new and so special... *sob*

GAME The Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time
MOMENT Leaving the Temple of Time for the first time after seven years of sleep
REASON There are lots of memorable moments in this game but none left a bigger impression than this one. First you find out that you've slept for seven years and that Ganondorf has taken over control of Hyrule. Then you leave the temple to see that what was once a lively town square filled with people going about their business -sales people, etc - is now completely gone to ruins and deserted except for some re-deads.
Majora's Mask is the darker game? No scenes from Majora's Mask come close to the impact of that scene...

GAME Resident Evil 4
MOMENT The Barn Siege
REASON The start of the game had been immense, but this stunning set piece with Luis made me realise that I was playing something very, very special, and scarily, that there was perhaps even better to come. For me, it's probably the most memorable part of the game.

Sadly I can't find a proper video for it on YouTube.

It's game time!

You should get a 360 Drummy. And L4D (I know you could get it on PC but Peter Crisps ftw). Every level ends in a "Barn Siege" type event.

That's because it's not a barn siege, it's just a plain house.

GAME Sonic 3 & Knuckles
MOMENT Plugging in the two carts and playing as Knuckles on Angel Island for the first time.
REASON I used to love the Sonic games when I was a kid, and I'd played Sonic 3 to death, getting all the chaos emeralds and what have you, so I knew the game inside out. That first time you play as Knuckles and discover areas that were previous inaccessible... Good times for prepubescent JK.

GAME Ocarina of Time
MOMENT The opening sequence
REASON I remember being amazed at the graphics, for a start, particularly those little bits of fluff that are flying around in the Kokiri village. The bit where Navi bumps her head on the trellis gets me every time (even now) and the sense of discovery you get when you find your first sword is amazing.

GAME Abe's Exoddus
MOMENT Possession
REASON After spending screen after screen avoiding those things with guns, the moment where you finally get the opportunity to possess one of them and shoot gooseberry fool up was great. Particularly if you got the chance to backtrack through and shoot into the screen to kill the ones in the background.

GAME The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
MOMENT Fending off UFO's at the farm
REASON Majora as we all know is a little bit of a departure from the standard Zelda formula. By the time you get around to defending the ranch and its livestock from the invading UFO's you've already got into the swing of the ever looping 3 day cycle. The constant learning of peoples set routines and the events that occur. This style of play, reapating things, trial and error was different from Oacrina and previous instalments but it still felt Zelda-like. The UFO section was just completely barmy but brilliant. The extra little bit of being different sets Majora out from other Zelda's and makes it one of the most enjoyable.

Moments 2 & 3 to follow and with videolinks shortly :o

I hated that bit. There's so much pressure on you - if you fail that alien bit you have to go all the way back to the first day and start the whole sequence again.

Indeed but it's still a memorable moment, as there are many in Majora... the hand in the toilet... the pain filled transformations into Deku, Goron and Zora Link... the Swamp photo ride... etc etc.

I remember it giving me a fair bit of frustration as well. But it was so satisfying when I finally managed it.

I rarely game either nowadays. Also, I'm loathe to allow Resi 4 anywhere near retro gaming as it was only released on Wii fairly recently, but if we're doing that then:

Game: Resident Evil 4
Moment: Saddler kills Luis
Reason: The bastard. The absolute bastard. Luis was quite clearly a legend who would last the whole game and be whisked off in a helicopter with Leon and Ashley, having revealed his mysterious past and absolved himself of any wrongdoing. And he stayed that way right up until Saddler let his massive penis of doom slip out from under his robe and rape Luis in the chest. WHAT THE strawberry float? strawberry float YOU, strawberry floater. I will get even with you for this Saddler, you utter melter, for killing Luis before he even really got going. In all seriousness though, it wasn't expected(at least by my puny mind) and the shock factor, added to the fact that I really liked the character gave me a proper dislike for what was very much a run of the mill, anti-American enemy with little to distinguish him from the millions of his peers.

I'll do my other two in the morning but that's what springs to mind immediately.

Answering that seriously, the game is five years old now. Statute of limitations is up. B)

I played it in 2006. As I recall, we were playing the Crystal Maze game(that we won) and I kept forgetting to come on MSN because I was too engrossed in Resi.
