In my year in New Zealand, I think I saw about 10 women who didnt look like they were hewn from the mightiest tree trunks and had faces carved with axes.

Anyway, it's Great Britain, because that's the name of the biggest island in the British isles, and contains England, Scotland and Wales. That and we're Great.

Why do we call ourselves team GB then? Doesn't that alienate NI?

The full name is Team GB and Northern Ireland.
Understandably, there are a few NI types that are pretty upset about them abbreviating it to just Team GB.
