PostGRecommends: Platformers – Top 10 revealed p3
by SerialCeler » Fri Jul 01, 2016 5:00 pm

Results on p3

Welcome to a new series of GRecommends, but with a twist.

Instead of doing it by platform, this time we're looking for the top 10 by genre (OK, I ripped this idea off Edge #128).

We're kicking off with platformers, and there are so many to choose from.

There isn't going to be strict definition to work with – if you think it's a platformer, feel free to put it on your list and we'll see if the rest of GRcade agrees. But if you're stumped, here's Wikipedia's definition.

A platform game (or platformer) is a video game which involves guiding an avatar to jump between suspended platforms, over obstacles, or both to advance the game.

Just list you top 10 below (each counts for one vote, to make it easier for me to calculate when we get to the end).

Voting will be open for a month, and closes on 31 July.

• Perhaps you grew up with arcade classics such as Donkey Kong, Pitfall or Prince of Persia
• Mario could fill up a top 10 all on his own with his games, will GRcade agree?
• Maybe you preferred Mario's rivals like Sonic, Aero the Acrobat or Bubsy the Bobcat?
• Platformers used to be the go-to genre for a licensed tie-in. Will games like Aladdin, Duck Tales or Super Star Wars make your list?
• Perhaps 3D platformers are more your thing, so how about Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day or Crash Bandicoot?
• Platformers have been enjoying a recent revival. Are games like Braid, Shovel Knight and Super Meat Boy good enough to make your list?

As I ripped off Edge for the idea, here's the 10 they chose back in 2003 to give you an idea.

• Marble Madness (Arcade, 1985)
• Pilotwings (SNES, 1990)
• Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2 (SNES, 1995)
• Super Mario 64 (N64, 1996)
• Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox, 2002)
• The New Zealand Story (Arcade, 1998)
• Super Mario World (SNES, 1991)
• NiGHTS: Into Dreams (Saturn, 1996)
• Super Monkey Ball (GameCube, 2001)
• Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube, 2002)

Next Month: It's the Olympics, so we'll be looking for the top 10 sports games.

I personally wouldn't call nights a platformer.

I don't know how a game without a jump button can really be called a platformer.

Anyway there's not much point arguing about an EDGE article that's over a decade old.

I didn't realiseit was that old, thought it must've been a recent one.

Turnip knows  .

My top ten is:

> VVVVVV (3DS)
> Bruce Lee (C64)
> Spyro the Dragon (PS)
> Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Gameboy)
> Montezuma’s Revenge (C64)
> Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
> Thomas Was Alone (Wii U)
> Sonic Boom (Wii U)
> Fez (360)
> Sonic The Hedgehog (Mega Drive)

I've only included games that I've played for a fair amount of time; shockingly that means I can't include any Mario titles!

It's a genuine choice, dude, and I played it from start to end - but I'm not gonna talk over that... it'll kick off too much aggro! .

You need to play some then.

The rest of the genre is completely in the shadow of Mario for a very good reason.
