This is such a confusing thread. Two completely different genres paired together and then I see votes for Dynasty Warriors, which is surely neither

Anyway, a couple of votes still:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game
Double Dragon Neon
Power Stone Collection

I find it interesting that games like Streets of Rage are celebrated as pillars of the genre but DW gets gooseberry fool/discounted despite being a three-dimensional and more open iteration. How is Dynasty Warriors - a game where you roam around battering entire armies by yourself - not a valid consideration?

DW is more hack and slash than beat 'em Up imo.

I'm a big DW fan and not much of a beat 'em up fan, and I have never even considered them to be similar. They play completely differently. I struggle to see how any 3D game (as in gameplay, not graphics) can be classed as a beat 'em up when the side-scrolling seems to be such a foundation of the genre.

The level structure in a beat 'em up is "progress from start to finish", or basically left to right through a side scrolling level. DW has you capturing bases across an open map, while possibly completing challenges/events as they come up.

DW also isn't a game where you are against an army all by yourself. It's a game where two armies are fighting each other and where both sides have multiple officers/heroes. These don't play out like boss fights in beat 'em ups, as they are more often unscripted and reacting as AI to the state of the battle.

Only the story mode of DW is comparable to the level progression of beat 'em ups, and that's more just a videogame staple than anything else. DW also has a game mode more similar to a strategy game with you conquering the world, and also just lets you have free battles just for fun.

DW isn't about hand-to-hand combat. DW doesn't have environmental kills. It doesn't have you picking up and using weapons from enemies. Thematically it doesn't share common genre elements that are typically beat 'em up (city settings, law enforcement, vigilantism - not that these are needed to be a beat 'em up, but you're more likely to draw comparisons even with dissimilar gameplay if they are there). You don't play through the game as a set protagonist or even pick from a small handful of set characters, and you change characters constantly throughout the game.

The only real similarity between DW and other beat 'em ups is that you spend your time killing a lot of enemies. I don't think that makes it part of the genre.

Musou games are basically a genre of their own, but if anything I'd just call them action games with hack and slash elements. Although I realise we're arguing genre definitions so its all a little pointless!

It's interesting to read the discussion about this category. I can appreciate the arguments made although, for me personally, I feel a bit odd including stuff like, say, Streets of Rage alongside Virtua Fighter. But the category title is "beat-em up" rather than "fighter", so I guess I should.

On that basis:

1) Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)
2) Bruce Lee (C64)
3) Ninja (C64, Mastertronic)
4) Sleeping Dogs (PS4)
5) WCW/NwO Revenge (N64)
6) Dynasty Warriors 8 (PS4)
7) Way of the Exploding Fist (C64)
8) IK+ (C64)
9) Double Dragon (Atari ST)
10) Killer Instinct (SNES)

This really should be at least 2 seperate threads. The scrolling beat 'em up is too disticnt from fighting games. Mixing them together here surely only serves to dilute each genre's potential nominations.

Anyway if by beat 'em up you mean scrolling beat 'em ups I vote for in no particular order,

Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)
Final Fight (Arcade)
Scott Pilgrim vs The World (XBLA)
Castle Crashers (XBLA)
Double Dragon (Arcade)
Spider-Man The Video Game (Arcade)
Simpsons (Arcade)
X Men (Arcade)
Captain Commando (Arcade)
Knights of the Round (Arcade)

Soul Calibur 2
Tekken Tag Tournament
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Golden Axe
Streets of Rage 2
Viewtiful Joe
The Warriors

By the looks of things if it was just side scrolling beat em ups, it would be filled with 80s and early 90's Arcade machines :slol:
Asterix and the Magic Cauldron, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, X-men, Turtles, and Final Fight would be the big ones I would add behind the Simpsons

10) Killer Instinct (SNES)

One of the many reasons I love Jawa, I remember IK+ being mind blowing when it was released. I also really, really, really liked WotEF 2

My favourite beat em up/fighting game of all time though is Yie Ar Kung Fu, that game was utterly fantastic.

I remember getting this pirated back in the day when you could get a whole bunch of games on an AGFA C60. As was often the case though, I didn't have the names of the games on the cassette box, so had to figure out what was what by the loading screen.

It took me longer than it should have to come to the realisation that this wasn't 'Way Of The Exploding Fish'.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

IK+ was indeed an immense piece of coding, Rex... total class. I used to love the "ball deflect" bonus round :) . Fist II gained a generally mediocre reception, but I enjoyed it. The scrolling, exploration dude was a huge change from the original and it certainly was a tad sparse but it did show some ambition.

Rex Kramer wrote:...My favourite beat em up/fighting game of all time though is Yie Ar Kung Fu, that game was utterly fantastic.

That was fun on the 64 although I must admit that I used to cheat and use autofire to do repeated high kicks  ( :toot: ).

 . One of the best things about Exploding Fist was the incredibly effective yells and other sound effects. They were so meaty and impressive for the time!

The state of this thread. Why are you merging Beat 'em Ups and Fighting games into one top 10 list when they're different enough with enough gamed to have their own lists? :fp:

As the title says beat em ups that's what I'll nominate:

Streets of Rage 2
Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage
Final Fight
River City Ransom
The Warriors
Jackie Chan Stuntmaster
Viewtiful Joe
God Hand
Castle Crashers
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game

If this was a top 10 fighting games my nominations would be
Street Fighter 2
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat X
Injustice
Super Smash Bros Melee
Tekken 3
Soulcalibur 2
Dead or Alive 2
Bloody Roar
X-men Next Dimension
