Previous GRecommends threads

This month, we are looking for your top 10 beat ‘em ups.

Wikipedia actually makes a distinction between fighting games and beat ‘em ups, but I am classifying them in the same category.

A fighting game is a video game in which the player controls an on-screen character and engages in close combat with an opponent, which can be either an AI or controlled by another player.

Beat 'em up (also known as brawler) is a video game genre featuring hand-to-hand combat between the protagonist and an improbably large number of opponents.

So we are looking at both one-on-one fighters such as Street Fighter II, Mortal Combat and Tekken, and side scrolling beat 'em ups such as Double Dragon, Streets of Rage and Final Fight (plus anything else you might think should be included in this category).

Just list your top 10 below (each counts for one vote, so ranking them isn't important). No compilations please, single releases only.

In the case of title like Street Fighter II or Street Fighter IV, I will be classifying their various incarnations as one single release, so you only need to nominate once (rather than nominating the World Warrior, New Challengers, Hyper Turbo Fighting etc separately).

Nominations are open for a month and voting closes on 16 December.

There is also still time to vote for your top 10 Wii games.

This is probably my least favourite genre, and consequently I have probably played fewer of this type of game than any other – hence my rather limited top 10.

• Street Fighter II (SNES, 1992)
• Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / Nintendo 3DS (Wii U, 3DS, 2014)
• Viewtiful Joe (GameCube, 2003)
• Soul Calibur II (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, 2003)
• Killer Instinct (SNES, 1995)
• Tekken 2 (PlayStation, 1996)
• Dead or Alive 3 (Xbox, 2001)
• Street Fighter IV (PS3, Xbox 360, 2008)
• Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube, 2001)
• Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, 2008)

I know its up to individuals to decide what they think does and does not qualify in any genre, but I just thought I'd say that for me at least, the likes of Viewtiful Joe and Streets of Rage have no place here.

Honestly I don't think this is a good idea. There's enough good beat'em ups and fighters to have them in different categorys. In this case many amazing games are going to miss out.

Side Scrolling Beat 'Em Up's I think would be better categorised alongside 3D person Hack and Slash games, a game like Streets of Rage has much more in common with something like Devil May Cry than it does Street Fighter.

  • Streets of Rage 2 (Megadrivve)
  • Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2)
  • Guilty Gear X2 (PS2)
  • Street Fighter II (Arcade/Megadrivve/SNES)
  • Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
  • Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2)
  • Dead or Alive 2 (PS2)
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 (PS1/GBA)
  • Fighting Vipers (Saturn)
  • SNK Vs Capcom (PS2)

I'm tempted to replace Streets of Rage 2 to make this list consist entirely of 1 on 1 (ish) fighters.

Beat em ups were the first genre I fell in love with in the early 16bit days. I remeber the excitement when a friend of a friend got SF2 for the SNES and we all went to play it.

Punch Out (NES)
Streets of Rage 2 (MD)
Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)
Mortal Kombat II (MD)
Final Fight (Arcade)
Eternal Champions (MD)
Soul Calibur (PS)
Super Smash Bros (N64)
WWF Royal Rumble (SNES)
Rocky (Xbox)

Simpsons Arcade Machine (there are so many Arcade games that I loved in this style back in the day, but Simpsons was always my favourite)

Barbarian
Dropping this for No Mercy N64 cant believe I forgot it :fp:
Street Fighter II
Tekken 3
Bushido Blade
Tekken Tag
Soul Calibur 2 (GC)
Smash Bros Melee
Street Fighter IV

You know it has had a rocky start, and loads of missteps, but there is a great game here, and hopefully on the 3rd December we will get more news on what is going to happen in 2017 so
Street Fighter V

Agree!

I loved this too.

Also Turtles, Alien v Predator and Spiderman one where the other characters were Black Cat, Hawkeye and Sub-Mariner.

Tekken Tag Tournament

More to come.

Streets of Rage isn't a beat em up.

This topic upsets me. These are completely different genres! Why pair them together?

Anyway,

Super Smash Bros. (N64)
Soul Calibur II
Street Fighter II Turbo
Mortal Kombat 9
Streets of Rage 2
The Simpsons Arcade
TMNT Arcade
Viewtiful Joe
Muramasa
Castle Crashers
