It's almost as if people have voted for the games they have played and enjoyed.

I'd certainly question Goldeneye being in there. Sure it was fun at the time but it is certainly of the time. Play it now and you'll quickly discover it's as ropey as strawberry float and unlike Doom or Quake hasn't stood the test of time at all.

Halo Combat Evolved, absolutely. Halo 3? Good God no.

Agree with this, Doom is still an absolute joy to play.

Goldeneye is definitely dated, but it still holds up on the fun factor in multiplayer. Questionable controls don't get too much in the way when you're all dealing with them.

I reckon an ONLINE FPS top 10 would be a lot different also.

It is just the opinion of members of one gaming forum though. Some quality choices there nevertheless.

Of course, I was just saying that I'd hazard to guess the reason its there is because more people here played it that something like Battlefield 2 or Deus Ex or even the original Half Life.

The games either weren't available to console only players or had somewhat dodgy ports that didn't really allow for the experience to be had as intended.

I'd also guess that's why GoldenEye and Perfect Dark got so many mentions, not that they aren't excellent games (well GoldenEye is anyway) but I think if everyone had played all the games nominated they'd be a bit further down the list.

I think there was something of a console bias in my votes mainly because the brief period where I had a decent gaming PC was a long time ago, I played a lot of FPS games and they all kind of blur into one really so it's mostly console shooters that stand out in my memories.

Goldeneye Source is great, shame we don't play it often.

I think the reason Half-Life didn't make it is a lot of people voted Half-Life 2, and either didn't want to put two from the same series in or felt the sequel improved on it to the point where the inclusion of the original was redundant.

I suspect Deus Ex missed out as people may hesitate to class it as a FPS, and maybe see it as more of an RPG or an adventure game. It certainly isn't the same type of FPS as most of the games on the list.

TimeSplitters 2 clearly deserves its place, it's a classic and I won't have a bad word said about it.

I thought Quake III Arena might make it but unfortunately not. Good list overall though!

Except Halo made two entries so I don't think that's the case. I'm willing to bet most of the people who voted here played Half Life 2 as part of the Orange Box on console.

Except that didn't stop them voting for Metroid Prime, which is less of an FPS as far as I'm concerned. The main difference again is that one was a big console game and the other only really great on PC.

Here's a weird thing that I don't know if any other GRcadian will recall... you used to be able to buy replacement game boxes from Nintendo!

I picked up the GoldenEye 007 Nintendo 64 console pack in 1998. No, not the original version with the gold controller... I missed that and settled for the plain grey version. Anyhow, cracking game - but the cartridge was supplied loose; with a manual but without a box. Even back then I was a bit of a collector and so I got in touch with Nintendo Services and, amazingly, found out that you could order a replacement box for *some* titles. So I ended up with a proper boxed copy of GoldenEye. The box is *slightly* different to the retail version; one or two minor variances and the printing isn't *quite* as good. But I was well chuffed and it's the copy that I still have today.

"Cool story, bro" :toot: .

Thanks for the logo Jawa :toot:

GoldenEye made the concept of first-person shooters on consoles viable. I know there had been others in the past, but its popularity and success paved the way for the domination of the genre today. It was hugely innovative at the time, with its multiple non-linear objectives, location-based damage and the sniper rifle. It also had huge longevity with its difficulty levels,, extra objectives and challenges to achieve the cheats. And that's without even touching on the multiplayer, which is better than the majority of games on its own. And all of this within the confines of a restrictive movie license. It's well worthy of its place at the top of this list of first-person shooters.
