I'm surprised there has been this much debate over what makes a first-person shooter. I thought this would be one of the easier genres to define. I can't wait 'til we get to the top 10 adventure games or action games!

IAmTheSaladMan wrote:Metroid Prime... does this count, I'm not sure?

Of course. In GRecommends, the definition is always up to you. In fact, It is joint top of the metacritic list of first-person shooters. Personally, I think the focus is more on adventure than shooting, so I'm holding it back for that top 10.

Ste wrote:Harder than I thought. Play lots of FPS but apart from Goldeneye and Halo CE, which are in my all time top 10, to seperate another 8 that really stand out from the others was difficult.

I totally agree. I have played so many first-person shooters but it was hard to pinpoint those that were really better than the rest.

Black is a better seventh generation shooter than most seventh gen shooters

Loved that game at the time. The guns had such a heavy kick to them, and the sound effects for them were ridiculously good. I think it was one of the first games to have proper destructible scenery too. Pretty sure Edge described it as "Gun Porn" at the time.

Shame the ending was clearly rushed/cut as it literally just.... ends.

Happy to see someone else give Resistance: FOM a vote - it seems a little forgotten nowadays.

I bought it on PS3 launch day, the next day I was playing an online FPS for the very first time. I liked the quirky British sci-fi story and setting and the game itself was grand. I collected all the tapes(?) and the back story was cool. A nice cliff-hanger ending and everything was set for a sequel. Such a shame they panicked and rebooted the series with the generic dog-turd that was Resistance 2. Oh well.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.
