Super Mario bros
Trog
Punch out!
Kirby
Excitebike
Teenage mutant ninja turtles
The Legend of Zelda
Duck hunt
Balloon fighter

My favourite was Trog, it was pacman but with a dinosaur keeping away from cavemen instead.

Not enough Battletoads appreciation in here. I know it's notoriously difficult but I wouldn't say it's unfairly tough - most bits just need practice.

Turtles on the other hand is cruel and actually rubbish (and I say that as someone who still gave it a nostalgia vote.)

When I was six I travelled to see some distant relatives in the US. One of them had the biggest TV I'd ever seen in my life, and attached to it was this plastic grey box, with Hogan's Alley Duck Hunt and Excitbike. It was love at first sight. And 28 years later here I am.

I didn't have a NES (until I got the NES mini), but both my best friends at primary school did – great memories.

1. Super Mario Bros.
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Snake Rattlle & Roll
4. Chip 'n Dale: Rescure Rangers
5. The Legend of Zelda
6. Micro Machines
7. Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warship
8. Excitebike
9. Gradius
10. Castlevania III

That sounds like the sort of thing my 8 year old self would have loved.

It was brilliant, in Pac man when you eat the big white dot you can eat the ghosts, in Trog you turned into a t-rex and ate the cavemen.

Castlevania III
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Duck Hunt
Donkey Kong
Super Off Road
Marble Madness

NES was our first console so I have a lot of fondness for it, but at the same time we never had a lot of games for it hence the short list. Yeah I've emulated nearly every NES game ever since, but wanted to keep this to games I've played on an actual NES.

Would anyone mind if I made the winning 10 in to a quick GRcade YouTube video with quotes from here in it etc? Just thinking it might be fun.

No problem at all. I was going to try and do GRview articles for all the lists, but have only managed Xbox so far!

I've also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this nostalgia fuelled journey through gaming history.

Thanks Celer, it's been fun.

Playing through Super Mario Bros 2 at the moment (right at the end actually) and I'm surprised it gets such good ratings generally and a high ranking here. Really don't think it's anything special.

Isn't that the one that wasn't originally a mario game but was reskinned as a quick sequel due to the success of the first mario bros.

I think it was more because they wanted to release a sequel in the west but thought the real SMB2 was too difficult.

I know they say the difficulty thing, but most games were actually harder for the West than the Japanese versions back then, I don’t buy the it was too difficult line from them. I think it’s more to do with the fact the SMB2 was not a good looking game in comparison to the other games of 1988, Mega Man 2, Ninja Gaiden etc all gorgeous games plus Japan got Super Mario Bros 3 that same month as America got SMB2, I know these were pre internet days but Nintendo would be wanting to start shouting about SMB3 soon and imagine them trying to sell a game that looked like a 1985 game when there was so much better competition in 1988.

Added to the above, The Lost Levels was also deemed to look too similar to Super Mario Bros.
