Nice to see a lot of first party games in the list, Sony were really on fire towards the end of the generation 8-)

I think that it's less to do with Sony's quality output and more to do with people playing their multi-format games on 360.

Yep, generally I used my PS3 for the exclusives, particularly towards the ends of its lifecycyle. I like the system and I still have it setup but, personally, I preferred the 360 overall.

My PS3 gained 90% of its use from being my PES machine  .

Speak for yourself, Sledz.

GTA V, Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider all ran better on PS3.

Took third parties 6 years to master the Cell, but they eventually did.

That may be the case, but I still reckon most people used the 360 for multi-format titles. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

Most people.

I had a PS3 before I had a 360 but I knew that I'd buy a 360 eventually so I only bought a couple of multiplatform titles on PS3 to play until I had a 360.

That was quite an amazing console generation. Based purely on sales figures, you'd have to say that the Wii "won". Wth the PS3 having now over-taken the 360 in sales terms, many folk will say that the 360 "lost" that gen. But, for me, the 360 was the dominant games machine for the bulk of that period. Sure, *everyone* seemed to own a Wii, but for keen gamers the 360 led the way in terms of gaming range and quality. In later years, when MS simply - and oddly - dropped the 360, the PS3 ploughed on and coders eventually drove the best out if it..

IMHO, of course. And this isn't a dig at the PS3; I still like a lot of stuff for that machine :) .

It certainly was, 3 great competitors all all offering something unique and successful.

Microsoft focused on competition and community bringing online gaming to the mainstream. Halo 3, COD and FIFA were all immensely popular in this new online age. 360 started well and sold consistently throughout the generation.

Nintendo focused on family and fun catering for everyone from toddlers and pensioners with Wii Sports not forgetting their core base with arguably their greatest ever game, Mario Galaxy. They certainly won the sprint but by the turn of the decade the "fad" seemed to have died out. Still, a cultural icon.

Sony focused on culture and art with their expensive Blu-ray player which, eventually, delivered amazing cinematic games in the send half like Uncharted 2, Journey and Last of Us. Started slowly but really got going towards the end. Being the only console still in production who knows where the total sales will end.

That kinda chart is exactly the thing that will drive the story when folks look back on that gen in the future. On the surface it would appear that the 360 only gained third spot; but in reality it was the dominant platform for much of the period.

People forget that 360 had a year's head start, if you align the launches then PS3 outsold it every month, hence why it caught up and overtook it.

Is that really the case? I've been keeping an eye out for a new PS3 but very few places have them, let alone for a decent price.

PlayStation tends to get more late sales from Asia and South America once they become affordable. That's why you see games like FIFA 14 coming out on PS2, Brazil tends to be a generation behind.

A third of PS2 sales (50m approx) came after the PS3 launched.

In Brazil the Sega Mega Drive is back in production according to an article I read recently.
