Previous GRecommends threads

This month, we are looking for your top RPGs.

As ever, the definition is up to you but here is what Wikipedia has to say about them:

Players control a central game character, or multiple game characters, usually called a party, and attain victory by completing a series of quests or reaching the conclusion of a central storyline. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player.

Just list your top 10 below (each counts for one vote, so ranking them isn't important). No compilations please, single releases only.

Nominations are open for a month and voting closes on 13 January.

And while you are at it, don't forget to vote for your top 10 PS3 games.

Fallout 3
Persona 4/Persona 4 Golden (would these be counted as the same game?)

Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)
Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)
Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX)
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
Lost Odyssey (XBOX 360)
Skyrim (PS4)
Dark Souls (PS3)

EDIT: Gave this a little more thought and I've amended my list slightly. Also by odd coincincidence I've noticed if it wasn't for the two GameCube titles every entry would have been on a different system.

  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360)
  • Phantasy Star IV (Megadrive)
  • Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
  • Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (PSP)
  • Skies of Arcadia Legends (Gamecube)
  • Disgaea (PS2)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Gamecube)
  • Dragon Age Origins (PC)
  • Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)
  • Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon - (DS)

Removed Shenmue as it doesn't quite fit the genre enough for my liking.

My favourite genre, so going to have to leave loads out here. Plus there are dozens of RPGs I own but haven't played yet, so no doubt some of those would get onto the list if I'd played them all. :(

Final Fantasy VI
Deus Ex
Skyrim
Morrowind
Final Fantasy VII
Dark Chronicle
Fallout 3
Eternal Sonata
Mass Effect 2
Pokemon Red/Blue

I'm surprised with the love Skyrim is getting over Oblivion, Oblivion had much better guild quests and stuff. Also it had more variety in it terrain.

This will be very hard.

  1. Knights of the Old Republic II
  2. Pokémon Sun/Moon
  3. Tales of Symphonia
  4. Dark Souls
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles
  6. Fire Emblem: Awakening
  7. The Witcher
  8. Dragon Age: Origins
  9. Deus Ex
  10. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

I've gone for one game from each series to add variety to my list. Had I not done that, I'd probably have a list like this:
  1. Knights of the Old Republic II
  2. Pokémon Sun/Moon
  3. Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
  4. Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green
  5. Tales of Symphonia
  6. Tales of Graces f
  7. Tales of Vesperia
  8. Dark Souls
  9. Xenoblade Chronicles
  10. Fire Emblem: Awakening

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Pokemon Red/Blue
Pokemon Moon/Sun
Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls 3
Bloodborne
Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones
Valkyria Chronicles
Advance Wars

Does Fire Emblem & Valkyria Chronicles count? I wouldn't class them as RPGs myself.

They feature most if not all of the things which make a game an RPG.

The genre they fit in is called SRPG, its a subgenre of RPG.

Personally I think the focus is on strategy, so I'm waiting for that one for Fire Emblem but each to their own.

I cannot believe Secret of Mana, the greatest RPG of all time, has no votes yet
