Previous GRecommends threads

Switching from one Sega eight-bit system to another this month, it's the turn of the Master System to be given the GRecommends treatment.

Image

If you need a reminder, here's a list of Master System games for you to refresh your memory.

Just list your top 10 below – if you can (each counts for one vote, so ranking them isn't important).

Voting is open for a month, and will close on 18 May.

Look forward to seeing your nominations :toot:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Fantasy Zone
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Donald Duck in the Lucky Dime Caper
Shinobi
Enduro Racer
Asterix

Didn't grow up with the system but have really enjoyed playing its games after the fact. It was one of my favourite consoles to collect for thanks to interesting library, cheap prices and being easy to play in 60hz. Granted, the latter comes from pretty much every PAL release being horribly unoptimised :P

Hoping I can get to a few more games sometime, most notably Phantasy Star.

As my first console, the Master System played a large role in cementing my love of gaming and will always be remembered fondly.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Enduro Racer
  • Wonder Boy III: The Dragons Trap
  • Shinobi
  • Prince of Persia
  • Golvellius
  • The Ninja
  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  • Hang-On

I also loved the Snail Maze game and still occasions find myself whistling the music from it.

1) Space Harrier
2) Super Kick-Off
3) OutRun
4) Hang-On
5) World Soccer
6) Ghost House
7) Gauntlet
8) Alex Kidd in Miracle World
9) Enduro Racer
10) Choplifter

My first console* . I'm still impressed by Space Harrier and OutRun considering the technical limitations of the system. World Soccer feels almost unplayable nowdays but i hugely enjoyed it at the time  .

* I had computer systems previously.

I think I must have had a dodgy copy of that as it was literally impossible to get past the first enemy in the game.

It wasn't the game that was too difficult, it just always glitched and killed you no matter what I you did (unlike the hellishly hard The Ninja, which once caused me to bite the controller in frustration, leaving teeth marks in the plastic).

That's a shame, it was a great game. One of only two (I think) that I had on card instead of cart.

Yeah, there weren't many games released on card. They had a pretty low storage capacity and, of course, the Master System II lost the card slot. But... they looked great! I really liked 'em. I have three: My Hero, Ghost House and Hang On. Hang On came on card alongside the first batch of Master System consoles.

If you're buying boxed versions of the card games now, be careful about the manual that is supplied. Card versions released with portrait format versions of the manual rather than the familiar landscape format and, quite often, re-sellers now put the landscape version into the box to try and cover for a missing manual.

It's one of the SMS games I was most impressed by when collecting a few years back, the non-linearity required to progress is pretty neat. Reminded me of Quackshot too which probably helped

Yeah, it had some surprising Metroid elements to it. I remember you got the power to shrink a ways into it. Some levels had new paths in them for that.

My Hero and Ghost House are my two. My copy of Hang On was a dual cart with Astro Warrior, which came with my machine (I always assumed it was a launch machine, but it may have been a second batch).

Seeing that photo in the first post representing the Master System pains me.

I think Transbot was released on card and cartridge formats, I had the cart version.

My machine was the original style one but it had two games (plus the snail maze) built in, Hang On and Safari Hunt. I didn't actually get any more games (Transbot and World Grand Prix) until my birthday, which was over 9 months after getting the console and I didn't know how to get the cartridges to load up (I was 9 at the time).

I had teddy boy on card at one point, never sold it never did anything with it put still haven't managed to find it in years which is a shame as I've never actually gotten to use the card slot on my master system.
