Previous GRecommends threads

This month, we are looking for your top shooting games.

I was initially going to call this category Shoot 'em ups (as that's what I would call them), but because I want it to include light-gun games, and I didn't want to get it in the neck like I did on the beat 'em up category.

As ever, the definition is up to you but here is what Wikipedia has to say about them:

Shooter games are a subgenre of action game, which often test the player's speed and reaction time. It includes many subgenres that have the commonality of focusing on the actions of the avatar using some sort of weapon. Usually this weapon is a gun, or some other long-range weapon. A common resource found in many shooter games is ammunition. Most commonly, the purpose of a shooter game is to shoot opponents and proceed through missions without the player character being killed or dying. A shooting game is a genre of video game where the player has limited spatial control of his or her character, and the focus is almost entirely on the defeat of the character's enemies using long-range weaponry.

However, first-person shooters are not eligible in this category (because we have already done them)

EDIT: I got it in the neck anyway, so no third person shooters either, please.

Just list your top 10 below (each counts for one vote, so ranking them isn't important). No compilations please, single releases only.

Nominations are open for a month and voting closes on 10 February.

And while you are at it, don't forget to vote for your top 10 Nintendo DS games.

Yep, they count in this category, so stick them in as there won't be a separate one.

Another mish-mash category I see.

Quite how you can count R-Type in the same genre as Splatoon (or Gears of War) is beyond me.

Surely 3rd person shooters don't count here? It says this in the OP:

"A shooting game is a genre of video game where the player has limited spatial control of his or her character"

But also from the OP...

I'm just trying to cover as many games as possible, otherwise they won't get a category. You might classify Gears of War as a shooting game, you might classify it as an action game - it's up to you, but I don't want to be restrictive because genres are so subjective to people anyway.

For me, the focus in Splatoon is on shooting, which makes it a shooting game in my opinion. Gears of War there is a bit more focus on story, etc which for me makes it an action game.

The wikipedia definition isn't final, just a suggestion.

Plus, if you don't like to incluse those type of games, don't - and then they won't make the top 10.

C'mon son, 3rd person shooters need their own category. It's a totally different type of game and a huge category in its own right.

Nobody has voted for one yet so you can edit the OP and pretend like this never happened ;)

Wow, this is a tricky category. Most of my favourite shoot 'em ups are from a few years back. Personally I don't think I'll include lightgun games in my top ten, so... here we go:

01) Robotron 64 (N64)
02) DeLuxe Galaga (Amiga)
03) P.O.D. - Proof of Destruction (C16)
04) River Raid (Atari VCS)
05) Omega Race (Vic-20)
06) Geometry Wars Galaxies (Wii / DS)
07) Falcon Patrol (C64)
08) Deathsmiles (Xbox)
09) Space Invaders Extreme (DS)
10) Berks (C16)

If that is the general consensus, then consider it done.

No third person shooters either, folks.
