Almost included Crimson Clover myself, but I've hardly played it

We didn't quite get enough votes to form a proper top 10 (too many left on just two votes), but here's a top eight we did get instead.

1= Ikaruga (Dreamcast, 2001)
1= House of the Dead: Overkill (Wii, 2009)
3= Lylat Wars (Nintendo 64, 1997)
3= Space Invaders Extreme (Nintendo DS, PSP, 2008)
5= Killer 7 (GameCube, 2005)
5= Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth (Nintendo 64, 2000)
5= Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (Xbox 360, 2005)
5= Time Crisis II (PlayStation 2, 2001)

Bubbling under: Deathsmiles, Galaxian, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Ghost Squad, Gradius V, House of the Dead 2, Jamestown, PixelJunk Shooter: The Depths of Disaster, Point Blank, R-Type Final, Radiant Silvergun, Resogun, Super Probotector, Time Crisis

Wow! This voting category probably had the widest range of games so far; everyone seemed to submit a list of ten fresh titles :) . Although there were relatively few votes for each game, it's heartening to see that we've identified a great range of shooters.

Incidentally... has anyone tried Dariusburst on the PS4 or PC? It's currently on sale on the PS Store and it looks to be a really neat side-scrolling blaster in the vein of R-Type and Nemesis. Could it be worth a look?

As far as I understand its pretty short and still quite expensive even discounted. Unless you're a diehard shmup fan you could probably give it a miss.

Oh... thanks, man, but that casts a different light to what I'd heard, Trelliz. I believe there are a few hundred levels with the game offering two separate play-modes (story and arcade) whilst the DLC packs supposedly add a lot of additional stuff. Hmmn... will think it over. I believe suzz may have picked this up...

Don't take my word for it, i'm far from an authority on the genre and may have confused it with a similar-sounding game.

It's bloody brilliant, short but so very good.

I thought this was an FPS thread...I missed the deadline :(

I don't have 10 but here's a few I loved.

Xenon 2: Megablast.
Project X
R Type

Bollocks, I missed the deadline but that's the only reason Xenon 2 won't win this by miles.

Darius Burst is incredible. I dunno if I would have bought it blind for full price, but I love shooters so as soon as it came down in price it was a no-brainer. That said, Gradius and its derivatives are pretty much my gaming comfort food, so I'm not exactly impartial.
