Previous GRecommends threads

What's that you say? A top 10 for a console that has no gaemz!?!

You should all have had enough time to play on Breath of the Wild to determine whether it deserves a place in your top 10 best games.

So let's send the Wii U out in style by determining its top 10 games of all time!

Image

If you need a reminder, here’s a list of Wii U games

Just list your top 10 below (each counts for one vote, so ranking them isn't important).

Voting is open for a month, and will close on 30 June.

As always, I look forward to seeing your nominations.

I guarantee this is the most important vote you will make this month.

1) Mario Kart 8
2) Super Mario Maker
3) Sonic Boom
4) Thomas Was Alone
5) Pikmin 3

I've made my selections based purely on the fun that I have got out of the games. I feel bad because, although I know there are lots of other cool games, I just haven't played them for long enough to justify voting for them.

Shovel Knight
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Pikmim 3
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros WiiU

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker
Splatoon
Super Smash Bros
Bayonetta 2
New Super Mario Bros U

Haven't purchased/played DKC:TF, Paper Mario, Xenoblade, or Captain Toad so they might have made my list
Haven't included the Zelda remakes, TP:HD would probably make it, still need to play WW:HD
Star Fox was dissapointing

Some great games on the Wii U, but I'm definitely not one of those that even thinks it comes close to the library of something like the Dreamcast. There's a couple of games in my top 10 where my opinion of them is pretty negative. NSMBU for being too much of the same thing, and XBCX which felt a long way short of it's predecessor, and it's open World reminded me of the PS2 era.

Copy pasting from a similar SONM thread:

Only including games I played on WiiU (for example, no BOTW as I have it on Switch and no WW as I have it on GC).

Mario Kart 8

The best Mario Kart (although the Switch version has the original WiiU game beat) and one of the best kart racers ever made. Near-perfect for local multiplayer, MK8 still gets played regularly with my housemates.

Super Mario Maker

Is there a game more perfect for the WiiU and gamepad than Super Mario Maker? Probably not. User created 2D Mario executed near perfectly - all we need now is an expanded sequel to add functionality such as multiplayer and (deep breath) slopes.

Splatoon

A brand new Nintendo IP that has firmly secured itself a place alongside the other Nintendo greats. As an online shooter Nintendo had a lot to prove with Splatoon, and they did it. Everything from the fresh aesthetics and music to the superbly balanced gameplay makes this one of the best shooters of recent years - who thought that would be said about a NIntendo developed WiiU game?

ZombiU

This launch game still remains one of the best uses of the gamepad. An excellent singleplayer experience with an underrated but very fun asymmetric multiplayer mode that completes the package.

Hyrule Warriors

I might prefer the 3DS port, but Hyrule Warriors is still an excellent game on WiiU. A near-perfect blend of modern Musou and Zelda, the love here for both franchises is obvious.

Nintendo Land

A mixed bag of games overall, but Mario Chase alone elevates this to games-to-always-have-to-hand status. The world needs more asymmetric multiplayer games, and we can only hope they are half as fun and accessible as Mario Chase.

Devil's Third

I know what you're thinking, and it's true that the singleplayer here missed the mark (although I think it's still worthy of merit for the glimpses of how it could have all come together so much better). The online here was really the best part though, and it's a tragic shame that so few people played it. I had an absolute blast in the short time I spent with the game.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Or to give it it's proper title: Mario & Sonic Rugby Sevens. If Mario Chase is what makes Nintendo Land, Rugby Sevens is what makes M&SR2016OG (better shorthand on a postcard please).

Super Smash Bros. U

I'm far from a big smash fan, but the multiplayer appeal is unarguable and I do enjoy the new board game mode.

Fast Racing Neo

Until Nintendo finally give us a new F-Zero, Fast Racing will suffice. It's not quite on the level of F-Zero GX (what is?), but it's a great racing game.

I don't think I owned 10 games in the entire time I had a Wii U without counting Virtual Console titles so I'll just have to list what I had,

Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
Splatoon
Wind Waker HD
Hyrule Warriors (I actually forgot I ever owned this until just now)

Great Console! No disappointment from my side. I don't have as much time as many of you to play games so there were plenty enough high quality games for me. Plus I bought my Wii U late, so I had a full selection of games from day 1.

I still have some huge titles to play that I don't own yet.

  1. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
  2. Mario Kart 8
  3. Super Mario 3D World
  4. Tokyo Mirage Sessions
  5. Splatoon
  6. Super Mario Maker
  7. Pikmin 3
  8. Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush
  9. The Wonderful 101
  10. New Super Mario Bros U
Honourable mentions:
  • Yoshi's Woolly World - The Wii U has more than its share of platformers and Woolly World is as challenging as it is charming. It almost made me give Yoshi's Island another chance after being disappointed with it when I had bigger expectations of something called Super Mario World 2
  • Wind Waker HD - I grew tired of Wind Waker over the years and was in no rush to replay this, even the HD version, but I'm glad that I did as the simple addition of the Swift Sail makes a huge improvement to the game. It led to me charting the whole ocean for the first time ever and I would have scoured it for every secret had Twilight Princess HD not been approaching...
  • Twilight Princess HD - It's as close to Ocarina of Time HD that you'll get without an emulator
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - I've not played it but I've heard good things :shifty:
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - A fantastic spin-off from the wonderful Super Mario 3D World where Toad takes the limelight in an adventure of puzzles :toot:
  • Paper Mario: Color Splash - The humour, music and visuals make this a fantastic experience even if the card system has divided opinions. I didn't find the card system to be annoying as exploring the world rewards you with a plethora of coins and cards so you're always ready with a little forward planning
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X - The huge world that Monolith Soft has created is amazing but it isn't as enjoyable to explore as Xenoblade on the Wii because the music isn't as good and the characters aren't as delightful. It wasn't long before I'm really feeling it, Now it's Reyn time, Let's not lose our heads, though, Not bad, not bad at all and many more phrases were ingrained into my mind. Maybe I should give X more of a chance but seeing so many cliffs that cannot be climbed feels wrong after playing BotW

Hopefully XC2 is closer to XC with a few features of BotW as XC knocked Tales of Symphonia off the top of my list of JRPGs after over 10 years so I was very excited to jump into XCX after finishing XC. Failing that, a HD port of XC for the Switch would be very welcome :shifty:
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Better on Switch :shifty:
