im vegetarian but would rather avoid milk based for health reasons

ill take a look at the myprotein one ty - does anyone have a friend code or something for a kickback?

ive tried huel and their powder is utterly vile, but the newer bottled shakes are alright - the main reason i havent considered them for this purpose yet is just the calorie content - im starting from a skinnyfat baseline so for the first month or so im gonna operate tight on the calories and then build up as i trim off

How dare you insult my precious, delicious Huel :shifty:.

Just looked and it turns out I do have a code: https://www.myprotein.com/referrals.lis ... JAMIE-RNWI

Apparently we both get £10 credit if you spend £45. Not bad!

I haven't heard of Huel in years. Gonna order some of the powder to save me cooking yet another meal every day and see how I get on. What flavours you repping ob?

I normally play it safe with these things and just go basic chocolate, but my favourite flavour so far is strawberries and cream! The chocolate one is good too. The coffee is exactly as you'd expect, so pretty gross, although it's grown on me.

It's not usually the flavour that puts people off it, but the texture. There is an undeniable grainy texture that can actually be a little unpleasant and irritate your throat. If I don't mix it really thoroughly, I have to wash it down with water afterwards, otherwise I can end up choking mid-conversation even a few minutes after finishing a shake! You quickly get used to it, and to be honest I actually quite like it (not the choking so much).

It's hard not to get sucked into the theory of it, I find. £1.50 a meal, prepared in seconds, that tastes good, with perfect macros and nutrients...

Nice one, cheers man! The convenience of that as a fully fledged meal sounds incredible. Although 400 cal is a stretch for me to count as a meal, but still.

I have 1 or 2 protein shakes a day but huel sounds utterly joyless, a bridge too far for me

I tend to have it as an extra meal, or a large snack I guess. I find it really useful if I've had something beige, no veg etc. I can down a Huel and know that I've topped up my nutrients.

Also the obvious scenario where you find yourself in a rush and not with something normal you can put together quickly.

Also just on the calories note, I always make mine with milk (usually full fat). Tastes better and boosts nutrition.

Is it genuinely a like for like substitute for real food? Like as you say, replaces vegetables in terms of nutrients

Well, there is a range of vitamin/mineral content that is found in real food. All just molecules isn't it. I'm sure there is some science around how the body doesn't absorb it as well as it does from real food, but I don't know exactly. The convenience here is that you get a solid variety of them in one easy go, rather than having to eat lots of different fruit/veg etc.

My knowledge of Huel extends as far as "GRcade hates everything about it" (including you judging by my Moggybot skills!) so I've assumed it's overpriced rubbish.

i bought a few bags of it in lockdown so i didnt have to make food and i think it was the texture mixed with the completely false and confusing flavour that got me

as you say you cant complain too much about the perfect macros and calories for a quick drink though

annoyingly i dont mind the premade shakes but they are at least 3.50 a go, usually 3.90

My huel has arrived! Surprised by the amount of protein. If you use it as a complete meal replacement all day you end up with 200g of protein for 2,000 calories which is an insane intake. Still, for my purposes that works well.

Is Huel a better meal replacement for post gym workouts than a Protein powder?

I'd imagine it's healthier in general. I always mix in some peanut butter with protein shakes for a bit of additional nutrition and healthy fats.

In terms of building muscle, 30g of protein powder = 30g of protein in huel. Neither will be better than the other.

I used to be into all the casein, whey, etc gooseberry fool when younger but unless you're at competing pro bodybuilding level you won't notice the difference.

Never even considering Huel tbh, i am currently using PHD Synergy which has gone up in price recently (£50 for 30 servings) i'm wondering if Switching to Huel might be beneficial. I'm not a pro body builder or anything like that

I assume its Huel Powder is the best one, that or the Black edition?

For protein shakes, my understanding is whey breaks down faster so is better post workout whereas casein is a slower release and better to have just before going to bed. So basically this is what I'm doing-whey post workout, a casein about 9pm in evening. I figured in the long run getting both would be no difference in cost or effort to having 2 whey protein shakes a day (which is what I was doing). Sorts out 50g-60 of my 150g protein target for the day, and I actually quite like them, they're surprisingly tasty especially with milk.

It's hard to say how big an effect effect it's had because I've changed a lot things up in recent months, but things are going well and I'm making progress I'm happy with so I'm going to stick with it.
