I almost didn't get a chance to play this today, but I've just reached our first checkpoint. 8-)

It's strange playing this again after all this time, not least because I've realised just how much time that is. 1998! There's a lot I had to unlearn to get back into it, from simple things like not being able control the camera when looking round corners to figuring out how to actually shoot. I actually died after meeting Meryl because I couldn't figure out how to shoot the guards in time. :fp:

The graphics have obviously aged an awful lot, as what I remember being incredible at the time are now pretty muddy basic. There are still a lot of neat atmospheric effects to improve this this though, and being out in the snow still feels, well, cold. The voice acting is as great (or at least as distinctive!) as ever, although the script is a little more awkward than I remember. Snake likes to repeat what people say, doesn't he? Oh, and "Is that a woman?".

I'm loving this anyway. It's been far too long.

It is really odd shooting without any real aiming in place. I remember thinking the laser sight was so cool back in the day, but now I see it for what it really is, a way to tell where you're aiming as you'd have no chance otherwise!

There's just such a good atmosphere, everywhere is a nice self contained little area for you to scope out and plan your next move, something I think is missing in the other games (Its far too easy to just stumble upon people, well it is for me anyway).

ONe thing i'm not enjoying is how much you seem to play by the radar thing, although I'm sure this is just a side effect of the top down view.

Hiding in the back of that truck looking out over the snow sent a shiver down my spine :datass:

That's one of the more difficult things about the harder difficulties, the fact they take away the radar. I got the game when it first came out so I was only 9 and for some reason I couldn't grasp how the radar worked so never used it :fp: That did make it a lot easier for me when moving up to Hard and Extreme mode though.

What difficulty is everyone playing on? I think I'll start on it tonight, was thinking of trying another Extreme playthrough but then remembered you have to complete it once to unlock that. Also, I don't think I've got the patience I used to have, would probably smash my controller on some of the boss fights

Playing on normal as I want to enjoy it. I'm gooseberry fool at these games, I set off all 3 guards in the first area last night :fp:

strawberry float it, i'm out. Not enjoying it at all to be honest. I got inside the base and was told to find a lift thing, walked around all the upstairs area without getting caught, didn't see nothing, make my way downstairs and a guy standing pretty much underneath where I was laying down see's me somehow. I saved it just before that incase I strawberry floated it up but i've got no real motivation to carry on to be honest.

Due to work I've not had any time to play it, going to get stuck in to it on Saturday.

Still in two minds if I'll buy it for the Vita or not.

Well if you've bought it for PS3, can't you just re-download it on PSV?

Original copy supremacy :datass:

I'm actually concerned when it comes to the disc change and mantis battle that I won't be able to do it.

There's an option to designate which port your controller is in on the home button menu. Disc changing should work fine.

I've only got it for the PS1.

So when I get round to playing it, it will be on the PS2, the PS1 isn't out, it's boxed away.

I would maybe get it on the Vita for convenience.

There's no need to save unless you're about to turn it off. You only ever start from the last checkpoint anyway, which will be at the start of your current area.

In the bit you're on guards can hear you if you run on the walkway, so it's best to crawl to be safe. Other than that just avoid their cones of vison as usual and head to the lift!

It's really not hard anyway, and that's speaking as someone who's normally rubbish at stealth games. If you get spotted just leg it (beat up the guard if he's on top of you) and crawl into a vent or something. The guards give up pretty quickly.

Yeah, do PS1 games work on the PS3?

Didn't think the PS3 was that backward compatible.

They certainly do. It was only the PS2 compatibility that Sony ripped out.

Just about to finish Legend of Zelda NES so I'll get this started tonight. Love the old school NES-like gameplay of this game.
