I am hearing whispers that something fairly big is being announced today, apparently. Supposed to be good news. Maybe a game announcement. Sorry for the vagueness but has anyone heard about this?

Wasn't the original Xbox unveiled a year and a half before the US launch (E3 2000)?

Technically they have not confirmed that they are going to release a new console soon, so an announcement would make it 'official'.

Wouldn't announcing something now though hinder sales of the 360 once people know a new machine is only 18 months away?

Seeing as everyone already knows it exists, all an announcement will do is increase their share value. Besides, people don't stop buying games because 'there might be better games in the future'.

Bollocks logic.

If it's announced that a new console is on the horizon, people are less likely to buy the current console, unless they made it stupidly cheap.

Announcing the PS3 didn't slow PS2 sales. The mass public don't know about new consoles until theyre advertised on TV. Only the hardcore take note of console unveilings, and they buy consoles early anyway.

Conversely, if someone recently bought your old console they are unlikely to buy a new one for a while and froma long term perspective you would want them on the newer hardware.
