Didn't they say they weren't going to be doing anything big and then appeared during the Sony keynote that one year.

Just quietly release HL3 on Steam during one of the conferences. It would be hilarious to see the crowd all muttering amongst themselves and people starting to leave.

Imagine if instead of half life 3' Valve announce half life 2: episode 3.

A 3 fades into view up on screen. And seconds later the magical word "Dota" appears above it. Crowd goes wild. Boom. Gabe is shot dead by someone in the audience.
