San Andreas is my favourite GTA so far. I loved the huge map and the crazy vehicles (jetpacks 8-) ).

That is indeed an incredible achievement, and one of my favourite games of the generation. I'm not sure how big Red Faction Guerilla was in real terms, but that was a brilliant achievement too, in having every building destructable.

Somebody Else's Problem wrote:But then you get a jetpack and a harrier jet, and gambling, and street races, and car customisation, and driving schools, and oysters to collect from the sea floor, and trains to drive until they fell off the rails at high speed, and Boeing 737s, and hidden military bases, and BASE jumping, and photography, as well as the usual taxi, vigilante, firetruck and paramedic side missions.

If you can't find anything to do, that's on you.

Jetpack and harrier jet - cool. But flying school - not cool.

Gambling - didn't play much of that to be honest. Not my cup of tea, especially in a GTA game (though it would be foolish of them not to include those minigames in a city based on Las Vegas.

Street races - an interesting diversion, but far too easy. Plus driving at high speed is most of what you do in that game, and it gets old.

Driving school - boring, poorly made.

Collecting oysters - :| Anything that required swimming in SA was just straight up gooseberry fool.

Driving trains - yes it was cool to see them come off the rails, but I wouldn't exactly call it exciting. Nice little addition though.

Planes were fun to dive around in, swooping around and getting a whole new perspective on a world you'd already spent hours in was a breath of fresh air, and a change from the cars.

The military base mission was also quite fun, although doing it stealthily, as the game seems to want you to do, is not worth the effort. And sprinting around the base in order to stay in stealth mode was quite odd. Good dialogue inside the base though.

Base jumping - always cool.

Photography - what.

The taxi, police, ambulance, fire truck missions are a staple of the franchise, and a good diversion. But there were also things that were just boring, or pointless. Like the RS Haul missions, and the countless missions that wanted to introduce a new mechanic and so drilled it into your head so many times that you would become annoyed with the game (like destroying The Truth's crops, or spray painting over gang logos).

It's a fine game, and one of the best of the generation, no doubt. But to defend it with talk of photography, and collecting oysters, nah son. Nah.

Exactly. Red Faction Guerrilla scratched that itch perfectly.

I'm thinking about replaying it as well. I don't know if I should just wait until V though, I don't want to get bored of the formula before it's released.

Watching that last video, good god SA looking shite on the PS2.

Never played it on that system, only on the xbox where it looked ok, then my copy on the PC which looked amazing at the time.

It really looks gooseberry fool on the sony system.

Vice City is my favourite!

It's almost certainly a worse game than San Andreas but the atmosphere and the setting and the music were much more to my liking. It's just much cooler. Plus, I used to know the drummer from The Outfield 8-)

I noticed last night that a lot of the henchmen characters in Hitman Absolution are voiced by the host of the End Zone on WCTR, in San Andreas. Then spent the rest of the night remembering way more of WCTR locked away in my head than I thought was possible. It seems an awful lot of it is just straight up copied and pasted into my head.

Part IV's up: http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/lo72hv/gt-retrospectives-grand-theft-auto-retrospective--part-iv

Last episode next week.

I've never played any of the handheld GTA games - they don't appeal in the slightest. Quite an achievement technically though, some of them.

Love the look of china town wars, might have to download the PSP version on an emulator and give it a go.

Quick question (I never got far enough through San Andreas to get into casinos etc.)

Is there poker in San Andreas?
