News of this magnitude deserves its own thread.

The PSP's Indian summer continues, with Rockstar announcing that it's bringing GTA: Chinatown Wars to the handheld later this year.

GTA: Chinatown Wars was a critical hit when it came to the DS in March, with Rockstar's open-world formula translating beautifully to the demands of portable gaming. The PSP version will utilise the system's more powerful architecture, featuring revised widescreen visuals as well as enhanced animations and more story missions.

"We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo," said Rockstar's Sam Houser, "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

Sony's Jack Tretton seemed suitably pleased with the news, saying, "Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms. We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."

Chinatown Wars will be the third GTA game to grace the PSP, although it will be the first to utilise a top-down view on the open-world series.

Bit of a backwards step, if we're being honest.

Having a GTA game coming to your platform is NEVER a backwards step.

Maybe they'll actually make some money on it this time?

I think Rockstar were just laying the foundations with the DS version. They've now got a massively capable game engine which is light enough to run on a DS but can be scaled up for PSP or maybe even a Live Arcade or PSN release. If we're very lucky it might come to Wii too.

Imo, the touch-screen bits in the DS version added very little to the overall experience (and were totally unnecessary at times) so the PSP version shouldn't suffer too much without them.

Do you mean that it's a backwards step to port a dual-screen game that actually used the DS's capabilities extensively to a single screen device without a touch screen, or a backwards step in terms of the game not being another PS2-esque GTA?

I'll be curious to see if and how they manage to incorporate the touch-screen bits into a PSP port. Surely they'll have to lose the bits where you have to hotwire cars, pay your toll or root through bins.

They're only doing this because it bombed on the DS.

From what I've read the 2 touch screens were a central part of the game, so it's bound to lose something in translation to the PSP.

It's a shame it bombed, because it was a truly amazing game, and probably my favourite on the system. Rockstar squeezed so much out of a machine comparable in power to an N64.

The latter. Going back to top-down after managing to squeeze the 3D engine onto PSP. If it's full price (which it certainly will be), it's a bit of a kick in the balls compared to the fidelity of the experience you got for the same cash a couple of years ago.

But Chinatown Wars was a better game than either of the previous PSP GTAs so I'm kind of confused.
