Take-Two Talks Grand Theft Auto Wii

While Rockstar's renowned Grand Theft Auto series will appear on the Nintendo DS this winter, publisher Take-Two Interactive is continuing to remain quiet on the possibility of a Grand Theft Auto entry on Wii.

When asked today about a possible Grand Theft Auto game for Wii, Take-Two CEO Ben Feder refused to specifically comment on the potential project, thought he stressed that Take-Two plans to keep growing its "relationship" with Nintendo.

"We've spent an enormous amount of time and effort working with Nintendo. We're very proud of the partnership," he noted. "GTA: Chinatown Wars is an important step [in that partnership]...and we intend to continue to grow that relationship."

Feder's response marks a curious shift in tone from an earlier comment last December, in which the company apparently denied a GTA entry on the Wii.

"No disrespect," a Take-Two representative said at the time, "[but] I think there are other titles better suited for the [Wii] than Grand Theft Auto 4."

GTA: Chinatown Wars Arrives by January 31

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Nintendo DS entry in Rockstar's infamous action series, will arrive in retailers between November 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009, publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed today.

Take-Two CEO Ben Feder briefly mentioned the release window, which represents the first quarter of the company's 2009 fiscal year, during a conference call today. At the time of the title's announcement, Take-Two noted that the game would arrive this winter, but did not provide any further details.

Rockstar Leeds, the company behind previous handheld GTA games Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, will handle the effort. The company also plans to use the Nintendo DS console's unique features, such as its touch screen, to aid players in their hijacking hijinks.

So it's only four months away and yet not even a screen shot has been released?

There has to be a GTA Wii next year doesn't there? Just think how well The Daily Mail would be able to market simulating beating down a prostitute with the Wii Remote as the main selling point.

It's very worrying to be honest, I can understand why they didn't reveal it at E3, but now they've roughly confirmed when it will be shipping...the lack of screens/media is very bizarre.

I'm really hoping it's going to be a top down version with slightly better visuals than GTA2.

Rockstar's always very secretive about its games, though. Remember Table Tennis? Media for that was only released (indeed, the game was only announced) a few months before its launch.

The DS has hundreds of brilliant games available for it. And it might be here before Christmas anyway. It's like complaining about the PS2 line-up a couple of years back.

I completely forgot about TT.

Still, I was hoping for at least one screen by now...or maybe an exclusive hands on preview from a site... :(

Yeah, I can't say I'm not intrigued by what Rockstar has planned. But we've got the biggest franchise in the world on the most popular console in the world. I can't think Rockstar would possibly strawberry float this up, and it probably wants to make sure things are looking absolutely tip-top before anything is shown.

2D or 3D though? That's the kicker. I really can't see 3D working for something as big and deep as GTA usually is, and I think it might revert to how it used to look. Though Rockstar might have something completely different planned. As long as it's not a minigame-fest (unlikely, but you never know) I'll likely be picking this up on day one.

Professor Layton by the looks of things, and anyone who overlooks that because it doesn't appear to be for the core gamers needs a big slap in the face. One of the best titles out for the DS.

I really need to download a load of the puzzles I've missed with the US version. Though I'm tempted to get the PAL one and start again from scratch.

The DS does have tons of games, but I own most of them and I'm just hoping for something new for DS, Sonic Chronicles and Moon could still end up rubbish. Love Layton, got it in feb but that new boxart 8-)
